Medicare urged to flex its power and slash back premium hike

WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of a Senate panel that oversees Medicare says the Biden administration should use its legal authority to cut back a hefty premium increase soon hitting millions of enrollees, as a growing number of Democratic lawmakers call for action amid worries over rising inflation.

Last month, Medicare announced one of the largest increases ever in its “Part B” monthly premium for outpatient care, nearly $22, from $148.50 currently to $170.10 starting in January.

The agency attributed roughly half the hike, about $11 a month, to the need for a contingency fund to cover Aduhelm, a new $56,000 Alzheimer’s drug from Biogen whose benefits have been widely questioned. Without further action, the monthly premium increase would swallow up a significant chunk of seniors’ 5.9% cost of living increase.

I don’t think that’s what they said the huge increase was for originally. I’ll go back and do a little googling.

"In other words...they’re stealing from the fund."

Exactly. And YOU'RE going to pay for it!

We’ll ORDER people to maintain pricing, that should work. Oh, and you’re not allowed to quit your job. Let’s see what Mr. Thompson decides to do.

It doesn't matter. They will say anything to justify the increase.

THIS is why the leftist push for nationalized healthcare - it creates a monopsony.

When there is only a single buyer, that buyer controls the prices. For some reason, leftists think government-employee doctors will still work 15-hour days at a salaried job. They think government-employee doctors will see streams of new patients and backlogs will decrease. They think government-employee doctors will stay in the highly pressurized world where lives are in danger, instead of migrating to, say, finance.

But make sure there’s money for illegal immigrants. That’s important.

the monthly premium increase would swallow up a significant chunk of seniors’ 5.9% cost of living increase.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That depends on how much your SS check is. Yes, if your check is low, the increased premium would eat up the SS raise.
Sounds like a socialist theft program. Aren’t drugs supposed to under Medicare D? And $56,000?!? So it’s a way to steal from the middle class, funnel funds to Big Pharma, and somewhere else from there...
My state takes most of my Social Security because I was a teacher for a few years and get a state pension. My remaining SS does not ever cover the Medicare so I have to pay the rest out of pocket. They bill me once a year. What a shock to receive this bill for 2022 and find I not only had my increase swallowed up, but have to pay almost $300 more in Medicare premiums for the year. All for a drug that has questionable benefits. UGH.
Makes no sense.
Drug coverage is under Part D.
Something fishy going on here. Maybe that drug is expected to cause other expensive problems? Problems that will be covered by Parts A and/or B?
I reread that and feel I need to clarify. I have to pay $300 more than I paid last year for 2021. My total bill, AFTER they have taken ALL of my social security is just under $1,000.
You have my sincere sympathy. For all its faults, California does not tax social security.
Drugs you get at a drugstore and take yourself are covered under part D.
Drugs that are administered intravenously in a doctor’s office are covered under part B.
That’s why.
