Chinese state-run media says 'PLA will heavily attack US troops who come to Taiwan's rescue'
China's state-run media on Thursday (Dec. 9) warned that Chinese forces would attack U.S. troops if they attempted to come to Taiwan's aid when the "reunification force" invades.
On Tuesday (Dec. 7), U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that his country would "take every action" to ensure that a scenario in which Russia and China simultaneously invade Ukraine and Taiwan, respectively, "never happens." In an editorial posted on Thursday, China's state-owned Global Times attempted to cast doubt about America's willingness to defend Taiwan in the event of an invasion by People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces.
The publication claimed that Sullivan's "boast" is not credible because the U.S. "simply cannot build a deterrent to prevent" China from "carrying out reunification by force." It said the U.S. does not have the "true will to defend Taiwan at all costs."
The editorial pointed out that the U.S. is mainly supporting the buildup of Taiwan's self-defense capabilities through the sale of weapons. However, it argued that these weapons "are generally destined to be destroyed by the People's Liberation Army" as soon as the "reunification force" makes its move.
The author then warned, "It is credible that the PLA will heavily attack US troops who come to Taiwan's rescue." Believing that China is achieving a military advantage in the region, the article said PLA capabilities are "increasingly overwhelming the deterrence that U.S. troops may have."

When it comes to Taiwan, let’s look at things from the ChiCom point of view. (I’m NOT saying that view is correct.)
For a century the West bullied China. For example, the UK took Hong Kong just because it could. Other nations carved out pieces of China as well. Then there were the Opium Wars.
Now finally China is ready to take its rightful place in the world. But there is still one humiliation remaining: Taiwan. As a rough analogy, suppose after the War of 1812 the British kept Long Island, and populated it with loyalists. Eventually the United States would have had enough, and invaded.
I think Taiwan should apply for US statehood.
I see what you are saying, but I just don’t see that it is worth it.
To risk everything over some tiny piece of land? to risk having entire world turn on them if not militarily then cutting off trade with them? not to mention the loss of life from a war. It just seems like so much to risk for so little.
Common sense tells me that if we come to Taiwan’s aid WE will be attacking China’s forces.
They’re just bullies trying to scare everyone off.
Of course they may cause WWIII in the process.
The Chinese leaders are too busy eating General Tso’s Chicken.
I agree with you in that the risk/reward calculation is not in China’s favor should they invade Taiwan. And that’s why I don’t think it will happen. They will just bluster and threaten. Such tactics can pay dividends.
But I can understand the humiliation aspect of the whole thing. As I noted earlier, the mere existence of Nationalist Taiwan is humiliating to the ChiCom leadership. I’m no expert, but I guessing that the average mainland Chinese doesn’t feel that way. He’s got more important things to worry about.
China owns us, we aren’t going to war with them.
OK... it is not the same situation. Russia does not want Ukraine, at least not in the near future -- it will be too costly to maintain, Ukrainian economy has been wiped out.
But China does need Taiwan.
China is heading for trouble too... as the Western economies collapse China production will lose its markets. Eventually they will recover and find markets elsewhere, but hard times are certain. Thus, China will be moving toward a more fascist state too, and to maintain social cohesion successful "liberation" of Taiwan would be very valuable. And of course Taiwan's economy (chip production!) would be a nice bonus too.
A quick victorious war to solve internal problems.
And perhaps no war at all, the rumors are that Biden got his 10% already.
“And of course, Taiwan’s economy (chip production!) would be a nice bonus too.”

You hit the nail on the head.
China would love to control the world’s leading maker of computer chips.
During the Trump years, Taiwan announced it was building a
$35 billion chip manufacturing facility in Arizona.
Earlier this year, they announced they’ve upped it to $45 billion.
......well, that’s ok China but just be sure not to get any of your warships within a mile of ours during the daylight hours and 100 miles at night!
Stunning that China calls their professed ‘war’ against Tawain....reunification. ....with an independent population and land that has no interest in becoming a part of China.
Hard to retaliate against that Ohio Class Boomer after it sends its’ entire payload.

Tiwain isn’t just a ‘tiny piece of land’ when you understand the demographics of it’s location in that region. It’s like a giant road block off their coast for China. A good comparison is The Cuban Missile Crisis. Not many realize how extremely close we came to nuclear war at that time.....over “a tiny piece of land’.
More of that counterintuitive kind of talk, common with Communists. Greater peace through war. Greater freedom through enslavement. Greater communication through censorhip.
China really hasn’t changed how they think and speak since the dynasty era’s years ago. Their ambitions today are no different then they were then.
Good point. But I think they would have blockaded and starved the Brits into submission.
