I think the author made a mistake. He wrote “If you guessed anywhere under 300, you’d be wrong.” I think he meant under 100, since 176 deaths is well under 300.

It does not invalidate his reporting that almost 200 fatal heart attacks for student athletes is a lot more than past years.
