Officials in Europe said this week that the Omicron coronavirus variant could overtake Delta in becoming the dominant strain of the virus in just a matter of days, and warned of a possible "tsunami" of new infections.
"We expect it to overtake Delta within days, not weeks," First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said Friday, according to the Washington Post.
The U.K. Health Security Agency issued a similar warning, noting that Omicron has a "high growth rate," over Delta and that it will likely become the dominant version of the virus in Great Britain by mid-December. Meanwhile, in Denmark, researchers have warned that Omicron could become the main strain by "the end of next week," The Post reported.

So far, it seems to be significantly milder in the severity of disease, significantly evasive of vaccine protection from infection, and somewhat evasive of natural immunity protection from infection. Both vaccination and previous infection seem to significantly reduce severity of the disease, and initial lab tests indicate that the antibody infusions will be somewhat effective in treating it.
John Campbell has posted some very good videos on you tube. He is cautiously optimistic that this is the end of the epidemic.

yes, I wonder if they want to keep us in permanent emergency status, because of variants which are no more serious than the common cold.

It has increased hospitalizations and resulted in some deaths in South Africa, where it is more widespread (the dominant strain in more than half of the Country) - but the rates are significantly lower than earlier variants of concern.

It is the very thing the ruling class feared most; covid degenerating into a common cold virus. There go all their lockdowns, mandates, vaccine passports, concentration camps, business closures, myriad special rules for, well, every facet of life. Omicron most definitely IS news. The reason is that it apparently spreads rapidly and widely and, usually along with mild or non-existent symptoms, brings the gift of natural immunity. And that is GOOD NEWS.
He said that was a crazy idea, but he is the one who said that a pandemic was worth the risk to see the impacts of gain of function research.

Omicron just does not have all the moxie that a good solid delta scare can stir up. Because of the very low mortality rates being recorded for omicron variant (as in none at all) as compared to earlier strains, there is no longer much of a prediction of looming overloads of emergency and critical care facilities.
