Amtrak expects to temporarily cut some service next month as it warns of possible labor shortages due to the Biden administration’s coronavirus vaccine mandate which requires employees of government contractors to be fully jabbed by January 4th.
Bloomberg News reports:
As Amtrak prepares to comply with the federal vaccine mandate, it will likely need to temporarily reduce frequency, particularly on its long-distance services, Stephen J. Gardner, president of Amtrak, said in written testimony for a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing. About 94% of the rail company’s workers have been fully vaccinated as of this week. […] The problem is most acute on multi-day routes, where crew bases at some intermediate points have relatively lower rates of vaccinated employees.

Wait until some employees are no longer “fully vaccinated” when they don’t keep getting the boosters on time....
It isn’t a train, it is a hamster wheel.
My daughter is traveling from Chicago to Flagstaff later this month. She just talked to Amtrak yesterday. Your information is incorrect. There are no vaccination or testing requirements for passengers on this route. Passengers are required to wear masks.
She returns on Jan 4! :(
“No masks. No shots needed to serve or ride.”
Great idea. The “Unvaxxed car” with a higher $$ fare. Just sign a waiver that it’s not Amtrak’s fault you get “infected”. I’m sure it will sell well..
“Temporarily” is the new “unexpected”!
New drinking game required.
I got it from their own website a couple of months ago. Now it may have changed but it clearly stated that vaccine cards (or whatever they’re called) would need to be presented and that masks are mandatory.
They have vaccine requirements for lounges in some stations, but none for the trains. Chicago is one of the stations with lounge restrictions and I believe New York is a second one.
During the slowdown of Amtrak the Amish are upgrading their buggy ride schedules. A little slower but no trains are running.
My daughter just texted me and pointed out that New York has lounge restrictions, but Chicago does not.
Back when United Airlines issued a similar statement around the start of the fall, somebody compared the headcount number in their press release to that of their most recent 10Q filing during the summer.
Their conclusion was that UAL had either lied about their headcount on a Federal report, or lost close to a quarter of their staff in about two months.
Welcome to the Age of Biden. Everything costs more, if you can get it. Package sizes are smaller. No one wants to work. Service is worse and slower. Everything is getting worse.
before the govt took it over
Maybe 100 years ago or more. The private railroads started everything they could to get rid of passenger rail. They deliberately degraded the services to get rid of customers.
Yes indeed
