‘If I run, he won’t’: Donald Trump downplays Ron DeSantis’ 2024 prospects
Florida Politics ^ | December 7, 2021 | A.G. Gancarski

'If he wanted to run, that's OK with me. I think we'd win by a lot.' Former President Donald Trump continues to say Gov. Ron DeSantis won’t run against him in 2024 and can’t beat him if he does, while reminding voters DeSantis wouldn’t be Governor without Trump’s endorsement.

During an interview with South Florida radio host Brian Mudd, Trump offered his latest in a series of statements essentially claiming he made the Governor and DeSantis knows better than to run against him in 2024.

“I do think if I run, he won’t,” Trump said. “I know they try and create a friction. I don’t think it exists at all. It might, you know, you never know. If he wanted to run, that’s OK with me. I think we’d win by a lot. But he’s good. And he’s done a good job as Governor.”

Trump also offered a new detail on his 2018 DeSantis endorsement, with Trump finding new ways to explicitly take credit for DeSantis’ victory.

“When Ron came to me, he was at 3%. And he had no money. And he asked for an endorsement. And I actually, you know, wasn’t too thrilled because … you know, he was very good, he helped me with the (Bob) Mueller hoax, because we had many hoaxes, and he was on television a lot,” Trump said. “But people didn’t relate him doing that as Governor. So when he announced for Governor, people didn’t really know who he was.”

“So when Ron asked me for help, for an endorsement.” Trump added, “He was at 3(%), and 3(%) means you don’t have a chance. He went up like a rocket ship.”

Trump noted DeSantis’ chief primary opponent, Adam Putnam, told him the endorsement was “like a nuclear weapon went off.”

DeSantis needs to run. Trump had his shot and… …not so much.

Trump isn't going to run. If he was, he'd have said so by now. What's he waiting for?

What Trump isn't going to do, however, is turn off the fundraising machine. I'm sure I'm not the only one getting 6-12 emails a day from him asking for cash.

What I fear though, is that he'll tease a run until it's too late for another MAGA candidate to garner any kind of momentum and then back out, leaving us with a RINO hack as the frontrunner.

Anyways, I'll gladly vote for him if he earns the nomination but my tagline says who I'm supporting, even if it's between the two of them.

I’m pretty sure President Trump is not allowed to announce he’s running for President yet due to certain laws. He didn’t announce he was running for President the first time until June of 2015, almost 1 1/2 years before the election. I don’t expect an announcement from him until Summer 2023.

I prefer DeSantis as the next President and Trump running a media and technology free speech empire.

I just wonder if conservatives are so utterly stupid as to allow the democrats to goad them into a food fight between the top two contenders so they can destroy both or each other.

The obvious choice would be Trump.

I never understood this infatuation with DeSantis here on FR.

If you read his resume and background without knowing who he was, you’d swear he was auditioning for the lead role in a movie about “Deep State”politicians.

There's no law that says he can't start his campaign now. Democrat John Delaney officially kicked off his 2020 campaign in July of 2017.

Trump is uniquely positioned against all the other candidates in that he has already served as President of the United States. If he wanted a second term, he should've officially kicked off his re-election campaign the minute Joe Biden was sworn in. That he didn't tells me that he isn't serious about running again. But the teasing allows him to keep the fundraising going.

—> His lack of humility is a big turnoff and all conservatives love DeSantis.

Nothing new there and I just polled our household - 100% don’t care and laugh with Trump about this.

Like desantis. Doing a great job in FL!

Prefer Donaldus Maximus Trump in DC. This man fights.

Trumps ego is what keeps him running his mouth. What is he doing with all that money he is fundraising??

If I were a politician running for office and Trump took a shot at me for not being on board with his BS I’d be on national TV telling him to STFU.

We need a pragmatic effective leader...and frankly this country doesn’t need another 4 years of the type of BS that went on with him and Congress.

I'll vote for the R nominee, because I have to.

But I'd MUCH rather have it be Desantis.

DeSantis has a fine résumé and background. Commendable military service and stalwart executive leadership as governor.

Ron DeSantis is the man Trump tried to be. Everything about Ron DeSantis is better than Trump. He's Donald Trump without the multiple divorces, the pussy-grabbing, Trump University, gold toilets, and on and on. Just a good family man, veteran, and a damn great governor.

DeSantis already said he’s not interested.

DeSantis isn't going to run for president until after he's been re-elected as governor. If he announced his presidential ambitions now, it would hurt him in his upcoming gubernatorial campaign.

Politics 101.
