Don't let the State remove (or avoid placing) protections in the name of laziness or apathy. When the State accepted the tent encampments on state highway land, the State accepted responsibility for the residents' safety.
The driver may have been DUI but would not have killed the tent dweller if the engineers at the Oregon Department of Transportation and/or the Oregon State Police had done their jobs.
These folks need to be held accountable instead of slouching toward Gomorrah.
Problem.
Camping beside a freeway is worth a Darwin award, not to prejudge the outcome of this legal matter.
Rather like camping at Avalanche Lake and suing when your tent is covered in a landslide.
The state is permitting it.
Good luck with that.
Brother had a old home built at the bottom of a hill and curve, in South Portland ME. Built back in horse and buggy days.
Forward to the 70's, and at least one driver per year launches their car at his house. Wants to put in large boulders to protect the house, insurance won't let him in case someone hits the boulders. Asks the state to add guardrails; they won't do it until "enough damage is done". Which would be a dead child in the house.
Plants some small pines, and prays for the ten years it takes them to grow to protect the house. Couldn't plant big pines, but could plant small ones and let them grow - only because they used to grow there.
And sell the house as soon as the kids graduate.

DUI,DWI i understand, at first i thought it was a headline typo but nope, there it was in the article, so, i am confusion... intox influence makes sense though
