(WXYZ) — Oxford Community Schools superintendent Tim Throne released a letter to the community on Saturday detailing the school's version of events leading up to the deadly shooting at Oxford High School last Tuesday that left four students dead and seven other injured.

In the letter, Throne first expressed his gratitude for the teachers, students, staff and first responders for their actions on that day.

He also noted that they've requested a third-party investigation into the suspected shooter's interactions with students and staff before the shooting.

The letter addresses the Nov. 30 meeting with counselors, saying "At no time did counselors believe the student might harm others based on his behavior, responses and demeanor, which appeared calm. In addition, despite media reports, whether or not the gun was in his backpack has not been confirmed by law enforcement to our knowledge nor by our investigation at this time."

According to the letter, the student's parents never told the counselors about the gun purchase, and he was returned to class after his parents refused to take him home.

The letter also states the incidents remained at the guidance counselor level and never elevated to the principal or assistant principal.

Here is a link to the actual letter.

Here is part of the actual letter:

On Nov. 29, the suspect was discovered by a teacher to be viewing images of bullets on his cell phone during class. The suspect met with a counselor and another staff member and indicated he and his mother recently went to the shooting range and that shooting sports are a family hobby. Consistent with our school policies and procedures, the school attempted to make contact with the student’s mother to discuss the incident but did not initially hear back. The next day, his parents confirmed his account.

On the morning of Nov. 30, a teacher observed concerning drawings and written statements that have been detailed in media reports, which the teacher reported to school counselors and the Dean of students. The student was immediately removed from the classroom and brought to the guidance counselor’s office where he claimed the drawing was part of a video game he was designing and informed counselors that he planned to pursue video game design as a career. The student’s parents were also called in. Because it was difficult to reach the parents, the student remained in the office for an hour and a half while counselors continued to observe, analyze and speak with the student. While waiting for his parents to arrive, the student verbalized his concern he would be missing homework assignments and requested his science homework, which he then worked on while in the office. At no time did counselors believe the student might harm others based on his behavior, responses and demeanor, which appeared calm. In addition, despite media reports, whether or not the gun was in his backpack has not been confirmed by law enforcement to our knowledge nor by our investigation at this time.

“and he was returned to class after his parents refused to take him home.”

How is that possible? Just tell them their kid is suspended and if they don’t all leave they’ll be arrested for trespassing.

Read the letter.

He had no previous disciplinary problems.

His looking at ammunition on his phone was reasonable and confirmed by his parents.

He gave a plausible reason for his drawing, and did not exhibit any indications of being either suicidal or homicidal.

In other words, the kid was very good at masking his intentions.

In spite of what has been created as a narrative on the Internet, the warning signs were far from obvious.

Just by chance the chosen details focus on CYA for the Principal, and thus the Superintendent...

I understand what you’re saying. And I have my doubts they actually told the parents to take the kid home. But on the off chance they did it shouldn’t have been a request.

“According to the letter, the student’s parents never told the counselors about the gun purchase, and he was returned to class after his parents refused to take him home.

It is CYA. The school knew the family had guns in the home, as do over 40% of families in the USA.

In that part of Michigan, my guess is the percentage with guns in the home is over 50%.

Sure. But it is probably true.

After one of these events, everyone assumes the universe is controllable.

It isn't.

This event was very, very close to being prevented.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

The most effective way to prevent these events is staunchly resisted by the powers that be in the Media and among progressives generally.

It is to work hard to stop Media contagion. That could reduce the numbers by over 50%, according to some academics.

But the Media love these events, it gives them political power and lots of clicks and money.

Quite true. I certainly had access to firearms as a child, but somehow knew that going on a shooting spree was out of bounds. Fifty years ago, things like that would be such a rarity that I could excuse school officials for not even entertaining the possibility.

With what goes on nowadays, I can’t comprehend how it is not standard procedure, when dealing with students who have acted out enough to come to their attention (and have their parents summoned), for “experienced counselors” to explore the kid’s potential for and means of violence. To check lockers and backpacks. To ask belligerent/in denial parents about firearms, violence, self-harm etc. at home. Schools, courts, etc. seem paralyzed to do what is necessary to protect lives.

Goes to show....counselors are useless.

A friend of mine had to go through this counselor sh** with his son...Best buds had a fight......it was all noise...no actual fighting.

Same people they want to send to crime scenes instead of cops...

The news and social media is screaming to imprison not only the parents but the counselor, principal, his teachers and the superintendent. Waiting for sm to go after the store the gun was purchased at, the manufacturer, the patent office, whatever delivery service used for any gun components and the coffee bean pickers for every breakroom coffee pot.

Is there a fund anywhere to help out the parents with legal bills?

This is insane.
