Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole told USA Today he was "still a Trumper" as he approaches his 98th birthday on Thursday.
A former longtime senator from Kansas, Dole was one of the few GOP elder statesmen to support former President Donald Trump in 2016, and the only former presidential nominee to attend that year's convention.
"I'm a Trumper," Dole, who’s suffering from lung cancer, told USA Today.

RIP. I don’t understand why he and Donald Rumsfeld endorsed Trump if they were part of the Establishment or Deep State.
And still the better man. For a better America.
There are degrees pf membership in the Deep State. Dole was a useful pragmatist who never impeded anything important. He is a true patriot who loves America, even i. he would not have been a great president. He also made my run for state rep even more doomed.
What class Bob Dole has compared to the Bushes, Cheney, Ryan, Kasich (who wouldn’t acknowledge the convention in a state where he was governor) and the rest of the warmongering, draft dodging neocons. I’m glad I voted for him in 1996 just as strongly as I regret voting (and working for the campaigns of) the others.
Because it’s possible to not jibe 100% with anyone’s thinking - not just policy, but style.
Many here need to learn that, never mind Dems. “Cancelling” isn’t needed.
RIP Bob Dole. 1996 was not your time and the country lost big because it wasn’t
Dole would have been elected president in 1996 if Perot wasn’t in the race ..
Pretty indisputable, since Clinton directly ordered the OSL kill team to stand down.
I was a bit too young to vote in the 1988 primary, but I remember telling people I preferred Dole to Poppy Bush. If Bob had taken out the Shrubs that year and won the presidency, we might have a different, better country right now.
The difference between Dole and the Bushes is that Bob was a salt-of-the-earth real American. For all their phony Texan props of cowboy boots and pork rinds, the Bushes are New England elitist snobs who think they’re better than everyone else and ultimately share the same values as the institutional left-leaning elites that have destroyed this country. You can take the boys out of Andover, but you can’t take Andover out of the boys.
I remember watching one of the Bush-Kerry debates in 2004, and Kerry made all sorts of elitist, condescending statements (e.g. “Now, I doubt anybody here makes more than $330,000 a year.”), and Shrub never called him out on any of them. Why? Because Bush is so marinated in the same snobbery and elitism that he couldn’t even recognize it coming from Kerry.
They hate Trump because he’s a rough-around-the-edges, outer-borough, new-money guy who’s crashed their country club. He’s like the Rodney Dangerfield character in Caddyshack.
” I don’t understand why he and Donald Rumsfeld endorsed Trump if they were part of the Establishment or Deep State.”
Ah. Labels. Not always that helpful in sorting out such matter.
They were the only two.
Ditto
GHWB would have won without Perot, but Dole wouldn’t have.
All that matters is what Bob Dole (and the Lord God Almighty) thought the time that Bob Dole was ready to die.
Unbelievable some of the crap that so called Republicans and conservatives post. Pathetic.
About par for the course considering...
Yes, categories aren't always water-tight. The "Deep State" doesn't have formal meetings and memberships, so in retirement Cheney and Rumsfeld might go in different directions, even though they were close when they were in power.
I liked Dole, and like him even more now compared to Bush, Romney and McCain, but he was also seen as a RINO in his day, too much Washington, too much the "tax collector for the welfare state." When Dole and Bush were running against each other in 1988 it wasn't entirely clear who was the "real conservative," because Dole had been in DC for a quarter century at that point and was part of politics as usual.
Clinton won 49.2% of the popular vote, while Dole won 40.7% and Perot won 8.4%.
