If you’ve heard of “ghost guns,” you may have begun to panic about an epidemic of untraceable firearms lacking a federally-mandated serial number and assembled from parts purchased online or 3-D-printed. A recent New York Times article warned that ghost guns “can be ordered by gang members, felons and even children,” and deemed the rising number of seized ghost guns a “crisis.” The head of a gun-safety organization called ghost guns “the biggest threat in the country right now.”
The problem? None of this language is new. It echoes 60-year-old rhetoric first used to describe the country’s original post-World War II gun panic. Then, commentators warned about mail-order firearms; Lee Harvey Oswald had purchased a war-surplus rifle through the mail that he used to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. The Gun Control Act of 1968 restricted such mail-order sales, but similar gun panics followed, with “Saturday Night Specials” in 1970s, “plastic guns” in the 1980s and “assault weapons” in the 1990s.

If we just made Presstitution a Crime, most people fear of guns would disappear in short order
I would like to know how many homicides have been solved through serial numbers, and how many times they haven’t been able to solve a homicide because a ghost gun was used. Or is this just more anti-gun hysteria based on myth.
What does the author suggest? “Gun Socialism” where every citizen is issued a pistol, a homeland defense rifle and a couple thousand rounds of ammunition?
Who here hasn’t made their own gun?
tagline repair
But...but...I thought right wing White supremacist domestic terrorism is the biggest threat to our society. SenileJoe told us so.
I would think that serial numbers might be useful in solving thefts/ burglaries. If there were homicides ancillary to those crimes, there could be a connection.
See, I would think that the people shooting the guns are to blame for ‘gun violence’. Have I been misinformed?
They looked into that. Turns out it’s racist.
Gun socialism. I like it. Every one carries, everyone is equal under the law. Nice.
I wish my comment was not somewhat sarcastic, but truthful where actions have consequences and threats would be at the level of your mama taunts.
I think it’s sad that in some cases the same gun has been used in multiple homicides. The last one holding it gets the rap for a few murders without an alibi.
Too bad my finger isn’t loaded otherwise no.
Gun violence can’t exist with guns. Without them, it would just be plain old violence, like the good old days.
I read an assertion that China fell behind in weapon technology, in spite of their early development in gunpowder, because the emperors felt threatened by the possibility of firearms in the hands of the masses. A simple peasant with a rifle could defeat soldiers who were highly trained in swordcraft.
I think it’s sad that most people don’t realize that the 1968 gun acts were a modified copy of the 1938 German gun laws that kept guns away from undesirables. Sen. Dodd was a JAG officer (LT)during the Nuremberg Trials and got the basis for our laws from that. This I got from my father who was friends/acquainted with the Dodd family. I don’t know if it was nearly a direct copy and paste but it does remind me why I am pro 2A today.
you know what a Kentucky long rifle is?
well people still make them at home..
—good point—and there is so much slanted info in this article that it would take a tome to refute it—
Oddly gun crimes have sky rocketed after all the BS laws.
ergo yer laws are crap, that is why I have a gun...
I did read a quick text that the 1938 laws were modified from a 1928 law but when you limit the rights of any race or group from getting protection your setting up your “enemies.” At least 9 times were firearms were made illegal or confiscated in the 20th century did some form of genocide (data was from the ADL or simulator group) happen and it is much easier for the state to bully their residents. AUS, CAN, and GBR recently come to mind with heavy confiscation of firearms.
Data fabrication or prevarication should be made a crime as data is needed for any advanced data driven society to continue. As long as the circular firing squad of “garbage in, garbage out” analysis exists we will spiral downward.
