Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Formation of Florida State Guard

All the right moves….. We can expect the national media to go bananas as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a bold step in advancement of federalism with authorization and funding for the formation of a state militia known as the Florida State Guard

During an event today in Pensacola Florida, the governor announced the creation of three new state-centric armories to support the new state guard units. One in the former airbase at Homestead, one in Gainesville and one in Malabar. As noted in the release, “The establishment of the Florida State Guard will further support those emergency response efforts in the event of a hurricane, natural disasters and other state emergencies. The $3.5 million to establish the Florida State Guard will enable civilians to be trained in the best emergency response techniques.” (Video of presser at link)

The Governor’s budget proposal includes:

$87.5 million to expand the existing readiness center in Miramar and to establish three new armories in Homestead, Gainesville and Malabar; $8.9 million for existing armory maintenance; $2.2 million for a new headquarters for the National Guard Counter Drug Program; $5.1 million to support Florida National Guardsmen seeking higher education degrees; and $3.5 million to establish the Florida State Guard.

“We are proud of our veterans and active-duty military members and proud of what our communities do to support them,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Florida is one of the most veteran friendly states, and I think there are very few places that you would rather be on duty than in the state of Florida. As a veteran, I really appreciate what everyone who wears the uniform does in our state, and am excited about these proposals – they will go a long way and have a meaningful impact. In Florida, we are going to continue our momentum of supporting our military, supporting our veterans and being good stewards of our military installations.”

The military spending budget for the Florida National Guard supports vital emergency response services that the National Guard provides.

The establishment of the Florida State Guard will further support those emergency response efforts in the event of a hurricane, natural disasters and other state emergencies. The $3.5 million to establish the Florida State Guard will enable civilians to be trained in the best emergency response techniques. By establishing the Florida State Guard, Florida will become the 23rd state with a state guard recognized by the federal government.

The budget proposal also includes $12.2 million in scholarships for children and spouses of deceased or disabled veterans, and $3.6 million to improve base infrastructure and support projects that keep our military installations among the best in the nation.

This budget announcement is in addition to other announcements of items that will be in Governor DeSantis’ proposed budget to support law enforcement, education, Everglades restoration and water quality projects. (link)

A lot of conservatives are cheering this on but what happens when(it will happen sooner or later don’t kid yourself) a Democrat becomes governor of Florida?

If that alleged future liberal governor attempts to run Florida the same way Newsome runs California, then he is not a “liberal”. He is a progressive. As such Conservative Republicans in Florida would simply arrrange to resist and disobey any future progressive governor of Florida. IMHO he would not live very long if he did not follow policies established by his predecessor.

“State Guard people probably don’t shoot nearly as much on their own time, don’t bring their personal stuff to train with, and have a much higher average age than Marion’s troops.”

Hey, a State Guard is a good thing, not a bad one. Where are you coming from, other than a bunch of assumptions as to who will be in it. Patriots will be in it, that’s who. Good for starters.

Oh, I fully agree having them is a good thing, my point is that they need more funding/attention, and should be structured as an actual military force. I've been in the TXNG for several years, and one unit I was in had State Guard based at the same location. Another unit somewhat worked with some State Guard during Harvey.

They're not bad guys at all, but TMD (TX Military Dept) doesn't utilize the State Guard nearly as well as they do the NG. State Guard is an unarmed force (I actually didn't realize they aren't officially armed at all), don't have any military training required (they have a basic orientation training, but that's it), and aren't anything close to what people think of with "military". They're more humanitarian/civil affairs assistance, not much more. They aren't even a 'militia', really. They have zero combat component.

Most of the State Guard is either guys who retired out of NG/AD, but still want to do something, and guys who weren't eligible to enlist for health reasons or such. Again, nothing against them, they just aren't structured as what most people would consider to be a 'military' force.
