India's Population Growth Falls Below Replacement Level For First Time
If science ^ | 1 December 2021 | Ifl

For the first time in recorded history, India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen below replacement level, meaning the countries’ people are no longer producing children fast enough to replace the past generation and the net population growth will be negative.

The finding, which was part of the National Family Health Survey released this week, is a huge milestone for India and its ongoing struggle against the rapidly growing population, which is set to overtake China as the most populous within the decade.

The TFR represents the average number of births per woman, and for reference, the UK has a TFR of 1.65 while the USA maintains a 1.70. India has now hit a national record low of less than 2.0, below the replacement rate threshold of 2.1, with some regions even reporting a TFR of 1.6. While the effect will not be an immediate downswing in population, it will slow the population growth significantly.

India has been fighting population growth for decades, and public health officials have used sexual health campaigns in an effort to educate the population and increase the use of contraception. Such campaigns have had a dramatic effect, with the same survey revealing condom usage in India is up by around 3.9 percent since the last survey in 2015.

There is still work to be done, with five states in India still having a TFR of above 2.1, but the latest data suggests the campaigns are working and India may finally slow their population surge.

Experts says key contributors were an improvement in socio-economic conditions for millions over the last two decades, a higher age of marriage for many women and a shift toward urbanization – the urban fertility rate at 1.6 shows that women living in cities appear to be opting for smaller families.

Probably a good thing for India who has a huge population. I just wish africa and the Middle East would do the same.

I wonder if this takes into account all the Indians that have moved out of their country? Where I live in a small city of 40,000, there are about 2000 Indians that have moved here for jobs.

They can always import millions of legal immigrants and illegal aliens to ensure continued population growth and success at the polls.

If Bill Hitler, er, Gates gets the vaxxes into India big time, their population will drop MUCH sooner!

Though likely not as near to meeting his Maker as Faustchi, hopefully he gets an introduction to Him REALLY SOON!

Do not overlook the widespread use of contraceptives in the dramatic fall in birth rates since about 1960’s or so. Abortion on demand also plays its part, whether legal in a particular country or not.

China has learned this well, considering the vast overcount of male babies with no corresponding boost in numbers of female babies. Many young Chinese men will never have an opportunity to produce an heir.

Or maybe they can just go to war, kill off all the male population in the invaded country, and bring home war brides, as in that situation females will vastly outnumber males. Are you listening, Afghanistan? How about Iran?

Fertility drops as women become more educated. It happens everywhere, even in Islamic countries. It has the imams all upset. Interesting that education should be the driving force.

TFR is a problematic measure for nations which had had recent huge population growth. That recent growth means that the population is skewed young, and young women are obviously more like to have children than older women. The abundance of young women means that to quickly reach a TFR of less than 2 means social changes that will lead to a TFR of much less than 2 once young women aren’t so demographically dominant.

I just wish africa and the Middle East would do the same.

Actually there's a low birth rate in the Gulf countries. Countries like Afghanistan are outliers. Iraq isn't as developed as their cousins in the Gulf.

Not surprising - as nations become wealthier, their people stop having as many children, because they don’t need as many children. Want to reduce overpopulation? Work to give your people more economic freedom and opportunity. Another benefit of market economies.

Not to mention those open sewers in the streets for public bathrooms. Do they still do that?

... I should, however, note that India’s TFR has been slowly drifting downward for decades. The dip below 2 is a bit sudden, but I don’t foresee India having the problems had by Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, Europe, etc. There’s no hump in population structure akin to the Baby Boom.

India’s population will not start falling until the population of newborns exceeds its population of deaths. China’s birth rate was so dramatic that it has taken decades for those 0-5 to outnumber those age 70-75, and it will take decades more. But while India’s number of births hasn’t fallen very rapidly, it has been falling for more than 40 years... so it will see a population peak not much later than China’s... It just won’t go down as quickly afterwards.
