WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court appeared prepared Wednesday to uphold a Mississippi law that would ban nearly all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which would represent a dramatic break from 50 years of rulings.
The justices heard 90 minutes of oral arguments in the most direct challenge to Roe v Wade in nearly three decades over Mississippi's abortion law.
A majority of the court's conservative justices suggested they were prepared to discard the court's previous standard that prevented states from banning abortion before the age of fetal viability, which is generally considered to be at about 24 weeks into a pregnancy.
It was unclear after Wednesday's argument whether the court would take the additional step of explicitly overturning it's abortion precedents, including Roe v Wade.
The showdown, which centers on whether the Constitution provides a right to seek an abortion, focuses on a 2018 Mississippi law, blocked by lower federal courts, that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, allowing them only in medical emergencies or cases of severe fetal abnormality.
Those who seek to outlaw abortion entirely or drastically reduce availability have remained hopeful that the conservative-controlled Supreme Court will deliver them a victory decades after suffering a defeat in Roe v. Wade.
Supporters argue that the law is intended to regulate "inhumane procedures" and that a fetus is capable of detecting and responding to pain by that point in a pregnancy. Opponents contend that the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that the Constitution protects abortion.
"The Constitution places trust in the people, on hard issue after hard issue, the people make this country where abortion is a hard issue," said Mississippi Solicitor General Scott Stewart during oral arguments. "It demands the best from all of us, not a judgment by just a few of us."

It isnt for me to gauge the depths of God’s mercy, but Harry Blackmun deserves to burn in hell for Roe v Wade. His and his colleagues’ political decision led to the murder of millions, gutted republican government, and led to 50 years of political turmoil that didn’t have to happen if he was loyal to the Constitution and federalism
IMO, I think the Supreme Court will severely limit abortions but not outright ban them....
The Mississippi law does not outright ban abortions, except after 14 weeks which is early in the 2nd trimester....
If the Court goes all the way and gives the entire decision back to the States, it will only effect a small number of states because Blue States will rush to liberalize their laws further dividing the states which I think is a good thing...
regardless of any position on abortion, from a legal standpoint...the the Roe v Wade decision in 1973 is the most bizarre, weird legal ruling ever....that reason alone it should be struck down...
It borders on incredulity that they use the 14th Amendments “liberty” clause to base the whole abortion industry on, while forgetting that the baby also has liberty to live. To them, liberty means not strapping the woman down to a pregnancy that would interfere with her career plans.
EXCELLENT!
If that does indeed happen the democrats will use the issue, along with blatant fraud, to maintain control of the house in ‘22. One of the reasons this country is hell bound is that a majority of women will support the “right” to murder babies.
The Constitution doesn't give the federal government, including the Supreme Court, the authority to dictate anything regarding abortion. That's left to the states. Period.
What in the name of Sam Hill has been going on the past half century? And there really was a Sam Hill, by the way.
Have you looked at recent polls, they indicate just the opposite, don’t buy the MSM scare tactics....abortion on demand for any reason at anytime is not favored by the majority of anyone....
Technology compared to when Roe v Wade was decided has turned a majority of people into pro-life supporters...
Besides even if you are right, what is the right or moral decision, regardless of election outcomes.....If you can justify the current situation just to win an election, then I don’t know what to say....
see my tagline ...
It’s not a hard issue at all.
Prayers up!

Roe was a bad decision from the get go. Abortion should have always been a state decision, under the 10th.
If it goes back to the states, abortions may INCREASE. California and NY and Illinois might all legalize abortion to birth and beyond - and offer to pay for it. Anyone wanting an abortion will be able to fly there and get one and maybe have their travel cost reimbursed.
I fully support overturning Roe, but it won’t come close to limiting abortion.
“IMO, I think the Supreme Court will severely limit abortions but not outright ban them....”
Just to clarify, the court will not allow the states to outright ban abortion, but will allow states to severely limit them. States like New York and California will still allow abortion until the point of birth and beyond. Wealthy individuals will still be allowed to fund transport for individuals to obtain abortions.
I absolutely do not consider any poll, ever. Manipulative BS. I stand by my contention that a majority of women, in the privacy of a voting booth, support abortion. I say that based on my view of what’s going on in society. Forget the polls, your common sense and personal observation is a much more accurate gauge of what’s going on.
I dreamed I saw Sam Hill last night,
Alive as you or me;
"But Sam, your Prescott store is dead--"
"I sold cigars," said he,
"I sold cigars," said he.
I think that’s all we can ask for, is allow states to decide that is how it was before the Roe Decision, so why not now...it won’t stop abortion but it will limit it in certain states which I don’t have a problem with...
Then I fundamentally disagree with you, I think the advances in medical technology things like sonograms and fetal heart beat pre-mature babies living that are nowhere 9 months in the womb have changed a lot minds......
Heck even the jane roe of roe v wade changed her mind....
