F-35 fighter jet dropped off end of HMS Queen Elizabeth's runway with pilot ejecting as the plane sank

New footage has emerged of the moment a £100million F-35 fighter jet crashed into into the Mediterranean while taking off.

The pilot was able to eject safely from the jet, part of 617 squadron, before it crashed during the operation on the HMS Queen Elizabeth on November 17.

The video, which was leaked online, shows the pilot eject seconds before the high-tech jet topples slowly over the runway onboard the aircraft carrier.

The F-35 then disappears over the edge and the pilot's parachute can be seen floating toward the sea seconds later.

After he ejected, the pilot was reportedly left dangling from the edge of the HMS Queen Elizabeth because the lines of his parachute became caught on the edge of the flight deck. It is understood he was rescued by helicopter and suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.

An MoD spokesperson said: 'We are aware of a video circulating online. It is too soon to comment on the potential causes of this incident.

'The recovery efforts are ongoing and the Defence Accident Investigation Branch will report back their preliminary findings in due course.'

The footage was shared by defence commentator Seb Haggart, believed to be a former member of the Royal Navy, who posted the video on his Twitter page earlier today.

Andy Netherwood, a former RAF pilot, said on Twitter that the leak itself would be a 'source of concern' for the Royal Navy.

He added: 'In the long term, that may have bigger ramifications than the F-35B accident itself.'

In the days following the crash, reports suggested it may have been caused because a rain cover had not been properly removed prior to take-off.

Amazing survival skills of the pilot!

Not lifting here, pull handle.

Incredible skill.

Millisecond processing.

Sounds a lot better than getting keelhauled by the ship and then sliced and diced by the props.

Good point. I’m thinking if he parachuted into the water, that’s exactly what would have happened to him. Lucky break to have the parachute lines get snagged like that.

I’m glad the pilot is okay. This is certainly not a unique incident in carrier operations.

Maybe someone questioned the gender choices of a maintenance personnel, and it reacted out of personal distress.

In the days following the crash, reports suggested it may have been caused because a rain cover had not been properly removed prior to take-off.

The ground crew and pilot have some splain’in to do. Rain covers and various control lockouts all have big red tags on them saying “remove before flight”.

Ok, I am a ignorant one here, but this looks like a series of serious screw ups which caused this. And that camera footage leaking means someone’s going to jail if not a total career ender.

There are just so many questions about that.
