'People can change': Convicted killer who fought Fishmongers' Hall terrorist with Narwhal tusk speaks for first time of the attack... and his 'deep regret' for murder that saw him locked up for life

A convicted killer who used a narwhal tusk to help bring down the London Bridge terrorist has spoken about the attack as well as his 'deep regret' for a murder that saw him locked up for life.

Steve Gallant, 43, chased and helped pin down jihadist knifeman Usman Khan, 28, during the 2019 terror incident.

The terrorist killed graduates Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones at the event in Fishmonger's Hall before running out onto London Bridge.

Gallant was jailed for 17 years in 2005 for the murder of Barrie Jackson in Hull and was attending a rehabilitation event when fellow participant Khan launched his attack.

Gallant spoke today for the first time about the terror attack. 'People can change,' he told Channel 4.

'You can do something bad and do something good. I hope that it inspired other prisoners. '

He added: 'I deeply regret the fact that I have taken someone's life.

'And I understand and I accept, nobody has the right to take someone's life or use violence.

'The impact of being sent to prison and seeing everybody devastated had a profound effect on me very early in my sentence.

'It was that what made me make a firm decision to change, educate myself, and never use violence again.'

Since our governments won’t do much of anything to stop
terrorism, street justice is about all we have left.

The man he killed with the tusk, had just killed two
innocent people.

The prosecutor better be damned happy I wasn’t on that jury.

I would have voted to put him in prison.

I realized it was overseas. Just sayin...

He is a hero.

I’m wondering if people are misunderstanding this. He hasn’t been sent to prison for killing the terrorist. He was serving a prison term for murder and attending a rehabilitation event in London, when a terrorist event erupted around him and he fought the terrorist to stop them. He’s been released early from prison as a result (not just because of this - he was already heading towards release - but it did speed things up a bit).

Yes, it’s hard to tell at first what he was in jail for and when. He must have really changed because the murder sounded brutal. But he helped save lives by going after the terrorist.

Do you realize the man who stopped the terrorist was convicted of a murder(the one of which he speaks) almost 20 years ago? There were no charges brought against him for his actions in stopping the terrorist.

Hard for me to make any judgment since the person he beat to death was not a family member.........

But then again, my brother was killed in an auto accident when the 19 year old hispanic who was high on drugs and alcohol, ran a red light, hitting my brother's car in California back in 2001. The kid only got 4 years in prison........

I know Brits are eccentric, but who carries a narwhal tusk around with them, or finds one conveniently placed at a time of crisis?

Thanks so much for clarifying that for me.

The way it sounded, I thought he had been charged for killing
the terrorist.

So glad to hear that was an improper take on it.

Thanks for the mention. No, I did not understand it that
way.

I thought he piked up a new charge that was going to keep
him in for the rest of his life.

He took the tusk off the wall at the event, to use it against the terrorist. The event was at the Fishmonger's Hall, which is adjacent to London Bridge.

He was at Fishmongers Hall - traditional guild hall of London fish workers, now often used for events. The wall decorations have a fishing theme, including narwhal tusks.

This guy killed a terrorist, yes, but then after being released from prison early beat a man’s face with a hammer with 2 other guys:

“ Mr Jackson had been enjoying a night of drinking in The Dolphin, in Greenwich Avenue, Hull, on the night of Sunday, April 24, 2005.

At 10.30pm, before he could finish his drinks and make his way home, he was attacked and beaten so severely paramedics who tried to revive him could not find his mouth.

Mr Jackson was sprayed with CS gas and beaten to the ground with a hammer by two men, including Gallant. The pair lay in wait for Mr Jackson outside the Dolphin pub after believing he had attacked Gallant’s girlfriend.

After a city-wide police hunt, Jackson’s murderers were finally found.

The attack was deemed to have been premeditated and coordinated, as the men had laid in wait for Jackson, and continued to attack him despite him trying to run away.

A post mortem revealed every bone in his face had been broken”

This is not my idea of a hero. Did you guys read this article?

Yes, I read the article. And I think you have the timeline confused.

That’s understandable - the headline sets the mind to believe that is what the story is going to be about - very awkwardly worded.

He’s talking about the murder he committed in 2005 in the context of showing he is rehabilitated - not about the recent incident where he helped bring down a terrorist.

This seems to have caused confusion :)

I read the whole article also, and it didn’t clear it up for
me. If I had known the outcome, I may have seen the context
differently, but not knowing I thought he caught a raw deal
here.

Glad he didn’t.

Thanks for your response.

But he’s saying it now, and it applies to his justified use of violence to kill.
