Actor Matthew McConaughey announced on Sunday that he will not run to be the next governor of Texas, a decision that came despite a push from left-wing media for the actor to challenge Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
McConaughey, 52, had previously called for law-abiding citizens to “take one for the team” and give up some of their Second Amendment rights, and he had praised far-left Democrat Beto O’Rourke, calling him a “good man.” McConaughey also said that he had a problem with a recent Texas law that protects unborn babies.
“Listen, over the past two years, I’ve been working on the answer to the question of how I can be most useful in this life going forward — useful to myself, useful to my family, and to the most amount of people,” he said in a video posted to his Instagram account. “One category of service I’ve been exploring is politics. I’ve been considering a run for the governor of Texas.”
McConaughey said that he learned the following while exploring a potential run for governor:
“As a simple kid born in the little town, Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership. It’s a humbling and inspiring path to ponder,” he added. “It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.”

He’s going to ride beto into the ground....and blame GOP for their failures.
Never ever trust mccaunaghey... however you spell it. He’s pure poison!
So, exactly like Brandon’s administration?
I think they’d be way more psycho if that was the case. Twitter is a dumpster fire of leftist trash. There isn’t any moderate anything there.
Oh there’s certainly moderation, against any moderate or slight right sentiment.
Alright alright alright!
It took 61 posts for that famous line to come out. Freepers are slipping.
Methinks McConaughey would take the majority of votes from The Fake Hispanic™ rather than Governor Abbott, and that's why he is not running.
Veto Beto!
We don’t have any shared values, dude. That Lincoln has left the compound.
the left was only pushing Matthew because it would help them and hurt GOP-the left only cares about power, not the country or “shared” values
And methinks this FReeper agrees with you...
McConaughey said that he learned the following while exploring a potential run for governor:
“Our politics needs new purpose.”
“We have divides that need healing.”
“We need more trust in our lives.”
“We got to start shining a light on our shared values, the ones that cross party lines, the ones that build bridges instead of burn them.”
“Our children are our greatest asset, so, hey, let’s be as good of parents as we can be.”
“That freedom comes with responsibility, and that great leaders serve.”
... Seems this jerk realized that leftist/progressive views would not “sell” in Texas. He should have learned from Robert Francis O’Rourk.
Well here one that makes you say WHAT?
A FW patrol cop decided to be a lawyer. Went to school and completed the goal. Then he decided to change his name.
His choice: Matthew McConaughey
Lives near WeatherFord TX.
I kid you not!
LOL, you have to admit, the “fine Corinthian leather” thing became a cultural meme!
Heh, always spoken in the low breathless style of Ricardo Montalban!
Thank you...it is disconcerting that we even have to openly retort those things.
They live in a non-reality bubble which those thoughts don’t even seem to penetrate to them, and I find that widespread condition unsettling.
Welcome to FR.
As a natural born Texan who has lived here all my life, I just can’t understand why so many FReepers have been bashing Abbott the past couple of years.
How do conservatives ignore what he’s done on border security (with no Biden admin help), abortion laws, etc.?
Very good!!
I guess I’m too old. I have no idea what this dork is supposed to be famous for and I only saw his face the first time on this thread. ...He’s definitely not fit for a TEXAS Governor!
... I wish more politicians had come to the same conclusion.
