THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION

During my second month of night school, our professor gave a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Obviously this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper leaving the last question blank.

Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count on our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your lives, in your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her first name was Dorothy.

Does this mean that we are all supposed to be social workers and then social Justice Warriors? If a person has a name tag on display then I will be able to see the name. If not, I figure it is none of my business. Identity theft is big criminal business these days. Most people don’t want to give their names. I am required to display a name tag while I am at work.

No. It just means that we should be kind, especially to those who can’t pay us back. Empathy and altruism are good words to learn the meaning of.

When I use the atm by my bank’s mall branch, anyone behind me can easily see my full name on the screen. Right after the welcome, like I need to be welcomed by a machine...
It’s irritating, though if anyone were standing behind me I could cover the screen with my hand. Shouldn’t have to. Point is, it’s an unnecessary risk.

Are you snow free so far? We added a couple inches Thanksgiving day. Now it’s just cold...-10 on my front porch.

I sound like a real anti-social prick. The fact is that I am required to get signatures from the customers of a delivery service that I work for. With the signature, I then type the name into a cell phone which transmits the name of the recipient to the shipper, therefore letting the shipper know who actually received the package. Seldom if ever do I get a signature which will consist of English language Letters of any known alphabet. I then have to ask for a name. They will then say the 1st name and then walk away. I then have to ask for a last name. Nobody anywhere wants to give their name(s). They consider it a form of harassment if I just try to do my job. One time I tried to get a last name and the twitt called the owner of the courier company and tried to have me fired. The owner called me into his office and gave me the riot act, because I made a customer angry. So, in reality, I don’t want to know what anybody’s name is. It is just what I have to do to keep my job while maybe getting fired if I do try to keep my job.

Welcome to the Camteem, Trumpet 1, and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

I don’t think you need to be a social worker, but to be aware of those who work around you that help make things work. When I worked in the office I always made it a point to know the names of the cleaning folks just so I could say hi and thank them for the jobs they did. They were a cog in the wheel making things work correctly.
