The new COVID-19 variant first detected in South Africa was given the name Omicron by the World Health Organization on Friday.
An advisory panel classified Omicron as a highly transmissible virus of concern and gave it its name under its Greek-letter system.
It marks the first time in months that WHO has classified a COVID-19 variant with such a name – and is only the fifth variant to be given the designation amid the pandemic.

Just a few days ago the experts said not to worry about this 30 mutations variant, that only a dozen cases have been seen and that it is unstable and thus unlikely to be highly contagious. Now it has a name and is in several countries and flights are being cancelled again and Europe is ready to lock everyone down and they’ve got up to 2000 cases identified in South Africa and elsewhere.
They skipped ten letters after Delta. I can understand why they skipped some (Iota, suggesting insignificance; Mu, suggesting cows; nu, suggesting “new”; and Xi, suggesting China). But what was wrong with Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Kappa, and Lambda?
Which alphabet will they switch to after they run out of Greek letters?

As I said on the other thread, when you get right down to it, all the WHO has to do these days is come up with a real fearsome name, categorize a few scattered pneumonia cases as the new “variant,” and send out a press release.
