BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) — This year, safety is of the essence when you’re driving around town, and in and out of the car while running errands.
Carjackings are up nationwide. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says beginning in June 2020, the United States experienced a 13% increase in auto thefts. And in Minneapolis, there have been 540 this year — five times the amount in 2019.
The busiest shopping season is underway, and at Mall of America, shoppers are heading into the season with joy, but also with caution.
Maria Dockendorf and Tessia Gebherd have been friends since they were sophomores in high school. Now college students, they met up at Mall of America for a shopping reunion. They both say they keep safety in mind.
“I usually lock my car all the time, like double check, make sure it honks and stuff,” Gebherd said.

Safety experts say after shopping, go straight to your car while looking at surroundings. Once you get inside, don’t sit and scroll on your phone. Lock the doors and get moving.
The Richfield Police Department offers this simple tip: Keep car keys and house keys on separate rings, so even if someone gets your car, they can’t get in your house.
Police all over the metro say the number-one reason cars are stolen is people leave keys in the car for convenience.
Two other carjacking safety tips from police: At red lights, leave a car space ahead of you in case you need to accelerate fast.
And don’t resist if someone tries to take your car. Your life is not worth it. (emphasis added)

Plagued by the rheumatizz, air ye?
Regards,
I leave the keys in my car until someone stole it then he came back and kicked my a$$ for leaving the kens in the clunker.
Even if you are carrying, being in a crowded parking lot and indeed inside your own car present many problems if you want to follow rules like "know your target and what's beyond it."
At the risk of getting flamed, it is likely (especially if you have passengers) you may not want to open fire in the middle of a fist fight while you've got a steering wheel with which to contend and possibly a seat belt limiting your mobility. Indeed, many people train with their firearm in simulated bad guy situations - how many of us have trained for a car jacking?
I'm not saying don't carry. Indeed, the firearm may be helpful once your outside the car, That being said, there are MANY ways to train and be "armed" for a carjacking. Implements aside from a firearm for disarming bad guys reaching into your cockpit abound. This is especially important if you have children in car seats or elderly parents who ride shotgun (no pun intended).
That protection is useless without a booster.
Many of us here know it but it’s worth saying for those of us who always wear hearing protection, firing a gun in a small space such as a car will probably stop the threat but be prepared to be stunned and deaf for a few..
Mall of America.
As soon as they connected the “Somali Trolley” to it, the crime jumped.
Almost all of my family have left MN.
I’m trying to get the last of them to leave.
Yep. Pull up, and ease over if you can. Of course, people around here will drive for blocks in the turn lane, unless there’s a curb so they can’t.
If you want to be able to turn out of the line of cars you’re in, a good rule of thumb is that if you can see the rear tires of the car in front, there’s enough room. If there’s a line of cars on both sides of you, you might as well pull on up on the car in front, because you won’t be able to get out of your lane anyway.
The drivers who need to be dragged out of their cars and shot are the ones who are trying to make a left turn out of a side street and pull out across one side of traffic on the main street, then block the left-turn lane of the main street until they can enter traffic on the other side.
Well, The value of my life is not what's in question here...how much is their life worth, that's what's really going on here.. Is it only worth whatever they can get out of my pockets and my old car.?
If these hoods are stupid enough to put such a low price on their lives then they truly deserve the short end of the stick.... :(
Yep. I too believe there are driving violations worthy of an instant death penalty
That happened in Florida not to long ago. A carjacking victim was shot to death when the thieves realized they couldn't drive the stick they were trying to steal from him.
The left-turn thing is but one of many.
When will those South African flame throwers be available here to install? Watch the videos.
I hadn’t thought of that. I often stop to help someone jumpstart their vehicle.
Why call it carjacking. It is volunteering to be shot.
Easy, Stay out of the big city. Stay out of the hood. Come to upstate Wisconsin. You could leave your car running while you shop and your car will be there, toasty warm when you get back. Some societies naturally act with civility. Some don’t.
