Beauty of EMP is it will kill the cities. Thanks to many years of EPA and Democrats, most our industry have re-located out of large cities. Americans arenβt going to miss Democrat run cities very much. Cities are self- destructing just fine by themselves right now.

“IF you can identify the attacking country. That is a really big if.”
Very true. The Russians now have drone submarines which can launch missiles as well as explode themselves to create tidal waves. China likely has them too, and Iran is likely developing them. So who do we blame and are we ready for the response that will come if we wrongly blame Russia or China? (hint, they won’t be happy)

I know the premise of the novel, that an EMP takes out the electrical grid, is up for much debate, but the scenarios he paints of societal breakdown afterwards are far too plausible, IMO.

We have - a hardened infrastructure. We just haven’t funded it.

It kills everything electronic in the cities and rural areas, cars wouldn’t work, planes wouldn’t fly, trucks couldn’t make deliveries, communication and financial networks would not work, etc....
Yes, it would be chaos and anarchy in the cities on a scale that would be unimaginable, but the rural areas would not be far behind, fear and hunger make people do strange things.

I imagine that china supersonic missile thing could drop a handful of small nukes across the country that would detonate a few hundred miles up and that would do the trick.

I’ve read just the opposite, that a relatively small Nuke detonated in the center of the US at a sufficient altitude would take out virtually everything in the USA that is electronic that is hardened to withstand an EMP

The Chinese will find a gun behind every blade of grass. And they will work.

I'm just curious as to why,
when the U.S. did above ground testing in Nevada in the 60's-70's,
that there was no electronic disruptions from an EMP even at the local level?
Even the Governments electronic equipment being used wasn't disabled.
Asking for a friend.

We track the vast majority of orbiting objects, and how they got there/launch sites.
The tough one is the stuff of novels- heavy lift rockets launched from container ships that can reach sufficient altitude.

CME is long wave. Not much of an issue given the lead time.

The book One Second After is from 2011. It is a very scary book about the consequences of an EMP attack on the US.
Unfortunately, the consequences in 2021 are much the same as they were depicted in 2011 while the threats are greater.
This book is a must read.

Bump to your post #14. This book is a must read for everyone. I agree we've done little to counteract a potential EMP attack. Perhaps if more folks read this book we'll see some movement.

Semaphore, smoke signals and jungle drums will still work, so communication won’t be significantly affected.
