Controversy Rages as California Follows SF’s Lead With New Approach to Teaching Math
SF Standard ^

When Rebecca Pariso agreed to join a team of educators she said she expected some controversy.

“We were transforming math education, and change is hard and scary,” said Pariso, a math teacher at Hueneme Elementary School District. “Especially if you don’t understand why that change needs to occur. But I didn’t expect it to go this far.”

Every eight years, a group of educators comes together to update the state’s math curriculum framework.

This particular update has attracted extra attention, and controversy, because of perceived changes it makes to how “gifted” students progress — and because it pushes Algebra 1 back to 9th grade, de-emphasizes calculus, and applies social justice principles to math lessons.

San Francisco pioneered key aspects of the new approach, opting in 2014 to delay algebra instruction until 9th grade and to push advanced mathematics courses until at least after 10th grade as a means of promoting equity.

San Francisco Unified School District touted the effort as a success, asserting that algebra failure rates fell and the number of students taking advanced math rose as a result of the change.

The California Department of Education cited those results in drafting the statewide framework.

The intent of the state mathematics framework, its designers say, is to maintain rigor while also helping remedy California’s achievement gaps for Black, Latino and low-income students, which remain some of the largest in the nation.

Publications like the National Review have objected to the framework’s occasional citation of “A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction,” A manual that aims to show math teachers how they can use their class to combat white supremacy. The manual asserts that current math pedagogy in the U.S. reinforces white supremacy in a variety of ways.

I have a BS with a Math Major, that degree paid for itself many times over. Usually about twice a month I get contact from companies wanting me to apply, and that BS in Math is a primary reason.

The Chinese students must be steeped in “white supremacy” because they excel while American students fail.

The Communists are apparently designing the curriculum.

STEM is hard, especially engineering, physics and math. You can’t pretend hard things are easy and expect the graduates to be competent.

What you will likely end up with is a lot of people with worthless degrees because they won’t be able to atualy do the job.

“and applies social justice principles to math lessons.“

India and China laugh at us again.
And India and China train the computer programmers and doctors that we MAKE THE CHOICE not to train here in the US.
And send them here to work .
And the US kids that took “social justice math”; deliver Door Dash food to those Indian trained professionals.

This is so infuriating , and preventable .

The dumbing down of America continues. Meanwhile China continues to churn out engineers and India does programmers and doctors.

I have had problems with math since forever.

When I was younger calculators had just come out and cost several hundred dollars

We were banned from using them at school because the disadvantaged students might not be able to have access.

Anyway you could buy cheap basic plastic slide rules, or even circle things at the drug store for under a dollar so I got one of those, but I was banned from using that cause reasons ?

anyway years later HP made calculators that were not polish. I used and still use those. I cannot easily use a calculator today, let alone figure out how they can teach you to do basic math from left to right.

“Change is hard and scary”
Try “asinine and destructive.”
Nothing more insulting than being patronized by an imbecile.

Anybody remember the ‘Inner city math quiz’ gag that went around about 25-30 years ago?

If Johnny (who is White) has 3 apples, and Ricky (who is Black) has only 2 apples, how many apples do they have all together.

Correct Answer: Johnny is a RACIST!

Social justice applied to ... Mathematics. Mathematics is NATURE- something these morons seem to not understand. It is NATURAL LAW. And it is PROVEN. It has no racial or “cultural” basis for the FACTS. The facts exist and are uncontested.

This is sheer lunacy. Unless the goal is to create millions of Winston Smiths (1984 Orwell) all conditioned and forced into the FALSEhood of 2 +2= 5. FIVE is the politically correct and completely FALSE answer the State insists on. New Math.

in recent years California has plummeted to the bottom of states ranking in public education. That’s right, worse than the proverbial Mississippi, west Virginia, or whatever other state the elitist einsteins choose to stigmatize. This math fiasco is part of the reason why.
