Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

How was yesterday’s outing at the lake? Did Gizmo drag you out on the rocks again?

It does make all the difference. The corn I get from that guy practically melts in your mouth, it’s so tender. His other produce is delicious too. He’s got that green thumb thing going.

Yep, he decided he wanted to do the rocks again. We'll see how things go at Chisolm Trail Park later today but here are the pics from yesterday at Comanche:

The only thing that grows here is dirt and cactus, unless you have a thumb green enough to produce okra or tomatoes. Hubby has tried, but has never been wholly successful. He did have an “accidental” tomato plant one year that had lots of yummy fruit, but it turned out to be a one-off. He does have some potted herbs that he uses when he cooks stuff.

The lil stinker loves those rocks, doesn’t he? And those smelly spots. LOL

Have fun at Chisolm Trail Park.

Yes, it does help to have water for veggies to grow and that’s a bit lacking in the desert. LOL

At least y’all have fresh herbs to jazz up dinners.

One year he babied a cantaloupe plant and ended up with one fruit that made it to ripening. We called it the most expensive cantaloupe in the state....from all the water we wasted on that silly thing. LOL! It was good, though.

Do you plant any kind of veggies yourself? Or do you have a black thumb like I do? I just killed my mother-in-law’s beautiful Christmas cactus that she had had for many years. sigh

I tried a garden years ago here with some success, some failure. We had a VERY wet spell that spring and a few things drowned - - like the sweet peas and corn.
Everything was planted from seed. No seedlings.

The tomatoes, green beans, and potatoes did well.

The biggest successes were watermelons and cantaloupes. The watermelons were 30 to 40 pounds and the cantaloupes were 12 to 14 pounds! Huge but sweet and delicious.

The next year, one of Hubby’s friends planted all kinds of stuff here to sell at his store, and he did this for a few years. We could pick whatever we wanted and that was a great deal to me. LOL From the garden to the table without the heavy work. I only picked what we were going to eat for a meal at a time except the corn. I’d pick two dozen ears to blanche and freeze each year.

He stopped when he broke his shoulder and wasn’t able to handle the work. A shame because he had a huge green thumb and his veggies and melons were scrumptious.

What a shame that friend hurt himself so he couldn’t plant. It’s a gift, and he seemed to have it. Hubby planted a sweet potato vine that I had growing in the house. Well it thrived, and when he was going to pull it up in the fall, dang if it wasn’t just loaded with sweet potatoes. LOL! Best sweet potatoes I have ever eaten. Never could do it again.

If we ever find some decent fresh corn, I’ll need to ask you how you “blanch” it. I’ve never done that in my life.

But now...it’s bedtime. See ya tomorrow! I just have to pick a quiz.

Yeah, it was a shame. His shoulder still gives him trouble so he must have done a number on it. We aren’t the only ones who miss his delicious produce. His store was always busy so those folks miss it too. I imagine some are shopping with the guy I do now.

Your sweet potato vine did what it was designed to do. LOL Nice that it survived after it was planted outside and rewarded you with treats.

Blanching is easy but it’s a little time-consuming. If I can do it, ANYone can. LOL I’ll keep my fingers crossed for luck that you’ll have an opportunity to try.

Catch ya tomorrow night for the quiz.

I went through 3 and a half weeks without power after Hurricane Wilma. Ungh!

That was in Florida. At least we didn’t have to worry about freezing out butts off like in MA.

Winter power outages are easier to me because you have natural refrigeration (just have to keep the ‘coons and bear away) and I can pretty much heat the house with the wood stove.

Haven’t figured how to use firewood for cooling! ;-)
