It’s China — they’ll just dump them all in the ocean or a desert.

EVs and climate change are as much about saving the planet as CoupFlu is about public health.

““A 20-gram cell phone battery can pollute a water body equivalent to three standard swimming pools. If it is buried in the ground, it can pollute 1 square kilometer (247 acres) of land for about 50 years,” “

Given the number of cellphone batteries already buried the earth is totally polluted.

You can recycle batteries right next to the wind turbine blades in North Dakota landfill.....

A lot of words to say:

Until a breakthrough in battery design, the electric car is deader than a dead battery.

I propose a solution from childhood: build a fort out of them.

From the article:

“In comparison, prices set by officially designated companies are often lower than on the black market, as the secret companies are able to cut costs by evading regulatory measures, according to China Energy News. As a result, the official companies cannot even obtain any batteries. An industry expert disclosed to Beijing News that about 80 percent of end-of-life power batteries flow into black markets for recycling.

When recycling is not an option for black market companies, the environment loses out. In 2018, authorities in Tieling City of Liaoning Province seized an illegal lead smelting plant and 330 tons of waste batteries. Workers at the plant dismantled storage batteries and discharged 50 tons of sulfuric acid directly into nearby land without any treatment, causing irreversible pollution.”

So, what's a few thousand tons of lead and acid dumped in China worth to US enviro’s?

Issue each battery an ID and a sizeable return deposit. If every cow eaten in this country can be tracked, batteries could be too.

Make it profitable to recycle your battery.

I remember as a young boy walking down rural country roads picking up Coca Cola bottles for the deposit money. Usually, I could walk from my house to the country store and pick up enough bottles to buy a coke and a moon pie.

I am of the opinion that all EVs, even hybrids, should only be allowed to use recycleable batteries.

And then lie about it.

And since most greenies are gullible, they will believe China and give Chairman Xi some sort of award.

The breakthrough need be in recycling. Should be cheaper to extract pure lithium from a boxful of it, than to dig it out of dirt and refine.

Well, I guess it would waste time and money if they bothered to transport it to an ocean or desert. Next-door is more convenient.

Remember those pictures of 7 and 8 year old kids at a river in China with a pile of circuit boards, a bucket, and a bottle of nitric acid recovering precious metals?

That’s recycling.
