Andy Kessler’s “A Long Time Since ‘Zeppelin IV’” (Inside View, Nov. 8) is food for thought. His glancing comment, “Although Richard Nixon was in the White House, there were hints of modernity,” reminded me just how progressive President Nixon was—especially relative to today’s progressives.
Let’s remember: Nixon created the Office of Minority Business Enterprise; increased the hiring of minority contractors; ushered in the peaceful desegregation of schools in the South and the Native American policy of self-determination; established the Environmental Protection Agency; abolished voter literacy tests; launched wars on cancer and drugs; signed Title IX, prohibiting sex discrimination at colleges; paid state visits to China and the U.S.S.R.; signed the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Leonid Brezhnev; and greatly supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War. He wanted universal health coverage and appreciated Hillary Clinton’s efforts toward that end, and he suggested an $1,000 a month basic income before Andrew Yang was born. A progressive Republican, imagine that.

Never a fan of tricky Dick
Andy Kessler’s “A Long Time Since ‘Zeppelin IV’
Anyone know how to get the free version of this?? TIA
He’s not wrong. And look what it got him, the left hounded him out of office on trumped up bull excrement. THAT is the lesson republicans should be taking from it. You CANNOT appease the communist left.
So Nixon was the original RINO?No, that would be
He laid the groundwork for the worst President in history, IMO.
Nixon and Kissinger got us into trading with China the big LIE of how this would bring China to our way of governing INSTEAD this country is NOW going the way of China’s way of governing AND it is happening at record speed these CCP bastards have their claws into our legislators it is time to RID DC of these power hungry commies!!!
I’ve said this for years but when I do some people around here get their hackles up about it and try to deny reality.
Nixon had his U.N. Amnassador, George H. W. Bush, throw Taiwan out to make room for Communist China.
Not an original RINO, but sure was a significant and damaging one as POTUS.
One pet peeve of mine listed among his anti-constitutional depredations was his creation of Amtrak, i.e. instead of doing the common-sense thing by deregulating the railroads instead. His successor Ford took that one step further five years later when he created Conrail.
War on drugs was and is a war on the peasants. The Feds are making a ton protecting the drug trade.
So many terrible appropriations of power by the federal government, the foremost enemy of the people.
Nixon did three good things.
Ended Vietnam
Resupplied Israel after its near defeat in ‘73 war and thus saved Israel.
Destroyed Mondale.
I can live with that!
he gave us Chyna ...
Yep. China would still be 3rd world if not for Nixon and people like Kissinger and George H. W. Bush.
BTW, I read today that Kissinger was the mentor for Klaus Schwab. Schwab is the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum. I don’t believe an international body is more powerful than the WEF is right now.
Respectfully, hoe did he destroy Mondale ? Thanks.
Trade with China didn’t really take off until Reagan and Bush started investment in it because they saw the Japanese as an economic threat in the 1980s.
Agree
Nixon destroyed McGovern, not Mondale, which was nevertheless a good thing. Nixon also ended the military draft, which some here want reinstated.
