More than 100 young people in Louisiana will receive $3,500 next year under a financial literacy program from the City of New Orleans.

City officials said Thursday that 125 residents between the ages of 16 and 24 will receive 10 payments of $350 starting next spring. The money will be loaded onto an ATM card provided by Black-owned online bank Mobility Capital Finance. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said..

The goal, city officials said, is to address the "unbanked" problem plaguing the Big Easy. The "unbanked" is a term the financial services industry has adopted to describe adults who earn money but do not use bank accounts to help them manage those wages. ...

One of 20 U.S. households are currently unbanked, according to a June study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Louisiana has one of the highest percentages of its state population that's unbanked: 15%...

...New Orleans received a $500,000 grant from Mayors For A Guaranteed Income in December and that money will be used to fund the cards. Mayors For A Guaranteed Income is a coalition of U.S. mayors who are pushing for a nationwide universal basic income program...

No word on how the 125 recipients will be selected. Paying people not to work was a bust, paying people not to commit crime was a bust, now we're on to paying people not to go to school or work?

When they did away with passbook savings accounts, they eliminated a valuable tool for promoting financial literacy. Now banking is hardly more than a TikTok app or a video game. Of course now banks charge hefty fees on savings accounts—ridiculous. What kid is going to open a savings account when banks charge $7, $8, or more per month is service charges.

Education is an opportunity, not a right. Shame on these lawmakers.

...financial literacy...

Hand out $350 and make them pay it back. That should do it.

I remember passbook savings. I had one for the earnings from my weekly TV Guide route. Brother had one for his paper route.

Math is also subjective:

In Robin DiAngelo’s (she along with Sensoy, Kendi, etc, are movers and shakers in CRT) book “Is Everyone Really Equal?”, DiAngelo posited:

1.) *”All knowledge* is taught from a particular perspective; the power of *dominant knowledge* depends in large part on its presentation as neutral and universal (Kincheloe, 2008)...*all knowledge* understood by humans is framed by the ideologies, language, beliefs, and and customs of human societies. *Even the field of science is subjective”* (p. 15).

2.) “Our analysis of social justice is based on a school of thought know as Critical Theory. Critical Theory refers to a body of scholarship that examines how society works, and is a tradition that emerged in the early part of the 20th century from a group of scholars at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany [taught there by Marxists]” (p. 25)

3.) “One of the key contributions of critical theorists concerns the production of knowledge…. These scholars argue that a key element of social injustice involves the claim that particular knowledge is objective, neutral, and universal. An approach based on critical theory calls into question the idea that objectivity is desirable or even possible.* The term used to describe this way of thinking about knowledge is that knowledge is socially constructed.” (p. 29).

The foundation for Critical Race Theory is Critical Theory, the proponents of it possess the hubris to think they can possibly say “All knowledge” concerning whatever when only divine beings possess all knowledge and they aren’t divine, and they also possess the hubris to think math, chemistry, etc are subjective, so they behave as if they are the masters and shapers of reality.

My grandfather lost $4000 during the bank failure in 1933. He died when I was 35. I never saw him ever have a bank account. We might want consider his position before we get wiped out as well. Since the banks are on more solid ground than the federal gubmint, I’m not so confident in that FDIC guarantee.

WOW! I’ve had the same C.U. checking and savings acct. since 1969 and they have never charged me for anything, not for writing checks or the physical checks themselves and zero fees for savings. Hard to believe that banks charge for using your money.

Wander what response I would get if I said I have my money in a white hetersexual owned bank?

You and I know that at the end of this experiment the recipients will still not know how to add/subtract and balance a checking account. This is just a slightly disguised trick to take money from earners and give it to dysfunctional, non-productive people who blame their failures on the productive ones.

Exactly! No mention here of testing the recpients’ reading ability before and after or comparison to a control group. This is just the Reds giving money away.

Little kids in Nawlins make that much a day tap dancing on a piece of plywood outside Cafe du Monde entertaining people drinking great coffee and enjoying beignets.

Only $ 350.00 a month? What cheapskates! It should be at least $ 5000.00 a month. The tax payers won’t mind paying the extra taxes.
