WASHINGTON -- Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary who holds the purse strings to much of President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure package, was holding forth with reporters on its impact — the promise of more electric cars, intercity train routes, bigger airports — when a pointed question came.
How would he go about building racial equity into infrastructure?
The 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate laid out his argument that highway design can reflect racism, noting that at least $1 billion in the bill will help reconnect cities and neighborhoods that had been racially segregated or divided by road projects.
“I’m still surprised that some people were surprised when I pointed to the fact that if a highway was built for the purpose of dividing a white and a Black neighborhood ... that obviously reflects racism,” he said.

Prepare to be sodomized, America.

He to read the book about I-94 and Chicago’s Maxwell Street.
It also divided white from white and black from black neighborhoods if anyone is paying attention, unless its a tunnel a highway is a pedestrian and economic barrier. It is only put up as a valid point since it is on the front steps of UIC.
Sad that no one could have predicted this.
13 RINO sons of bitches helped pass it in the House too - - think on that awhile.
As long as it's Democrat contributors and union labor, I think they'll take any color.
This has been the plan since the start.
The ONLY thing he has going for him is that he is not a million years old.
Let’s see if we can get the ships unloaded before the mid terms.
ABC News isn’t news.
just his hormones kicking up during his maternity leave?
He might be suffering from no-partum depression.
I’m sure he’s gotten quite an education since becoming SecTrans. No way he thought up that BS without help.
As I recall at my ripe old age the roads were built which created real estate voids for multiple reasons. None of which were intentional racism, but actually many of the reasons being with the intent to address the locales disrupted by the need of road construction of the day. Nobody went into this with malice of forethought, or premeditated racism.
I can see how Leftists would like to stir up racism any way they possibly can to further their Commie agenda, but this one would be disproven too easily with a simple quick glance at history.
To put a highway on the dividing lines between neighborhoods is to make race an issue, but saying that it's racist and therefore bad is -- given how things were at the time -- too much to expect people to simply accept as a fact.
In the context of the times, it can be difficult to separate policies that were designed to disadvantage minorities from those that were intended to keep racial tensions from flaring up into violence.
Today, we divide legislative districts on racial lines. Race is an issue there, but is that also racist?
“”the fact that if a highway was built for the purpose of dividing a white and a Black neighborhood ... that obviously reflects racism,” he said.””
And the MSM can report that with a straight face????
He needs to investigate and report back to the people who pay his salary, just how many highways were built for that reason.
The New York Times takes a bow they did their fair share.
A KFC and Taco Bell at every exit!
He still hasn't recovered from boiling his nipples.
“”I thought last week he was talking about the interstates destroying Black neighborhoods (as well as parkways with low underpasses)””
That is what was reported - as insane as it was...I think they’re holding competition in DC to see who can come up with the most stupid asinine statements...
VP in waiting?
He is not quite as vapid as Kamala Harris, but close to it.
He pushes all the right lefty buttons: working new mommy, non-combat military, and looks like a milquetoast (albeit Mad Magazine style).
At least he has nice hair.
And dresses the part. His pantsuits fit, and his topcoat doesn’t look like a potato sack.
The Proagandist Echochamber Narcacist Egotistical Supplanted, school of journalism?
It's embarrassing.
