Democrats and moderate Republicans thwart South Dakota conservatives on new redistricting plan

In a fascinating development, a group of Republicans in the South Dakota House banded together with Democrats on Wednesday to pass a new legislative redistricting plan over the objections of a sizable bloc of conservative GOP dissenters. All seven Democrats present (one was excused) voted in favor of the map, along with 30 Republicans, while 31 Republicans were opposed, meaning Democrats provided the winning majority. The plan, which originated in the Senate, easily passed the upper chamber 30-2, with all three Democrats likewise in favor.

The Republican objectors complained that the map would double-bunk some of their members and undermine their ability to elect far-right legislators. But at issue as well was the matter of Native American representation. In particular, the new map places the northern parts of Rapid City, which are home to a large Native population, into a single legislative district, a move that Democratic state Sen. Red Dawn Foster would enhance the community's voice.

Oh, what a surprise. Moderate republicans help create maps that democrats prefer.

They're just ALWAYS so helpful!

Kristi Noem should veto it, but she'll sign it. Because she's a good moderate helpmate too.

STOP voting for them! A democrat is easier to defeat than a RINO.

These so-called moderate Republicans are probably just protecting their own seats. Every one of them needs to be primaried.

The Moderate “Republicans” are as much of the problem as the RINOs and Never Trump crowds are.

The time to put the final nail into the GOP coffin is now.

We need a real, true Second Party to operate as an OPPOSITION Party.

I hate moderates (A.K.A. RINOs) probably even more than I hate Democrats, and I really really hate Democrats.

Both Demonicrats and RINOcrats are traitors to the United States of America.

Sometimes RINOs are worse than Democrats. Petie Wilson, California's next-to-last GOP governor--a RINO--successfully rammed through a huge tax increase that no Democrat governor had dared to even attempt.

I would agree except for the difficulty in getting it done. Too many factions vying for the power pinnacle. No vacuum remains unfilled by those reaching for the stars.

The tribal members should get as much representation as any Dakotan.

You see this is where a lot of us become idiots.

Yeah “moderate” Pete Wilson, governor of California put through a tax increase and better to have democrats.... Are you absolutely crazy?

Pete Wilson attempted to stop illegal immigration, for which he was destroyed and which in turn destroyed California and probably America.

But better to have Gavin Newsom right?

And I’m just wondering if a single one of you lives in South Dakota and knows anything about a redistricting vote, in a state where the legislature appears to be 63 to 7 republican?

Yeah California is a great example because “a Democrat is easier to defeat than a RINO”.

How’s that working out in California?

Generally speaking, I despise RINOs, but not enough to abandon a little thing called reality.

I agree. Often the better strategy is to not vote for one. RINOs tend to stick around thanks to "Broken glass" Republican voters.

Getting stabbed in the chest by a known enemy who says they will do it is an expected risk or outcome. Getting stabbed in the back by an ostensible ally is reprehensible.

“Kristi Noem should veto it, but she’ll sign it. Because she’s a good moderate helpmate too. “

Likely her plan, and given to her by that gay-looking ‘adviser’ that she answers to.
