(CNN)The federal government announced a large hike in Medicare premiums Friday night, blaming the pandemic but also what it called uncertainty over how much it may have to be forced to pay for a pricey and controversial new Alzheimer's drug.
The 14.5% increase in Part B premiums will take monthly payments for those in the lowest income bracket from $148.50 a month this year to $170.10 in 2022. Medicare Part B covers physician services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, medical equipment, and certain other medical and health services not covered by Medicare Part A, including medications given in doctors' offices. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services played down the spike, pointing out that most beneficiaries also collect Social Security benefits and will see a cost-of-living adjustment of 5.9%...

Reminds Me of the witch bookkeeper at a Water Treatment Plant I used to work at. Tried the same crap on Us with Payroll. I told them (Mis-management) that if they did this that I was quitting.
They did so I did.
I told the Operations Crew that she was stealing money from the Water System Corp. Nobody believed Me. 2.5 years later she and the gm had stolen just shy of $1,000,000.00 right under the noses of the Board of Directors. The 2 almost made off with it. The Bank found it during an Internal Audit. The Account was under the Company name but only had 2 names on the paperwork hers and his, no Board Members. As was required there should have been 3 or more Board Members plus the gm and bookkeeper. And the Account had the gm’s home address so the Statement and other paperwork went to him at home.
They lost their jobs but since the funds were never taken out of the Account no theft charges were filed. DAMNED IT !!!

When I saw the 6 percent raise in SS, I immediately thought ...there goes the deduction for Medicare...up, up and away.

I knew they would do this....give a long over due small raise and then over double the medicare tax...even though we’ve been paying for medicare our entire working lives.

The 5.9% applies to Social Security, the 14.5% applies to Medicare. For the Average Social Security recipient, who receives about $16,000 per year, that means about a $79 monthly increase in SS, partially offset by a $21.60 increase in medicare. (Medicare premiums are means tested, based on total income, so many pay nothing anyway.)
