The Political Center Is Gone

In a new USA Today/Suffolk University poll, resident Joe Biden's approval is down to 38%. Which looks pretty good compared to Vice resident Kamala Harris, whose approval now stands at 28%.

Democrats have just been reprimanded by voters, with the upset victory of Republican candidate and political novice Glenn Youngkin in the governor's race in Virginia, an almost upset victory in New Jersey by Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who came within 2% of the vote of winning, and revolts in school board elections nationwide, pushing back against critical race theory and COVID-19 government interventions.

It's not rocket science that Biden and his party have lost touch with the voters who elected them. Large percentages of these Democrats did not vote for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the "squad." And they are unhappy with Biden's capitulation to the far-left elements of his party.

Respected Democrat strategist Mark Penn has a piece in The New York Times urging Biden to shake off these progressives and reconnect with the moderates in his party. This is what Bill Clinton did, he reminds readers, to save his presidency in the mid-1990s.

Former Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal offers up a similar message in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. Both parties, after victories, tend to relinquish too much influence to the "extreme" elements in their party, he says. Statesmanship, the message goes, means understanding the need to move to the middle.

But there are problems with this sage advice. One, voters themselves are moving away from the middle. And, two, the reality of culture and politics of the country is things keep moving left. The only difference between when Republicans are in control and when Democrats are in control is how fast it happens.

Yes, it's true that Bill Clinton saved his presidency by turning to the middle. But then, in 1994, according to Gallup, 25% of Democrats self-identified as liberal, 25% conservative and 48% as moderate. Today, per Gallup, the percentage of Democrats identifying as liberal has doubled to 51%; the percentage identifying as conservative is half what it was in 1994 -- 12% -- and the percentage of moderates has dropped from 48% to 35%.

At the same time, Republicans have become more conservative than they were in 1994.

In 1994, 58% of Republicans identified as conservative. Today, it's 75%.

Statesmanship and compromise are only realistic when most voters, of both parties, are generally on the same page regarding our core values. But what happens when the common ground of core values is lost?

I started writing several years ago, noting the similarities of what is happening today in our country to where things stood in the 1850s when the institution of slavery was tearing at the soul of the nation.

Where is compromise about whether slavery should be accepted or not in a country that is supposed to be about freedom? Some insisted yes, some insisted no, and everything exploded into a civil war.

What is happening today is similar.

In a Pew Research survey from last November, 80% of Biden voters and 77% of Trump voters agreed with this statement about voters from the other party: "Not only do we have different priorities when it comes to politics, but we fundamentally disagree about core American values."

Culturally, there is no more room for compromise about differences of opinion regarding those accepting and those rejecting biblical, traditional values regarding marriage, family and sex than there was about slavery

Fiscally, government involvement in the lives of Americans is off the charts. In 2020, government spending at federal, state and local levels was already at 43% of our GDP. With the Democrats' spending blowout, government will be headed toward taking half our economy.

The challenge today is not to find a middle that doesn't exist. The challenge today is for Americans to choose who they are and what kind of country they want -- free or not.

We cannot coexist. We either separate peaceably now or violently later.

I’m curious, has there ever been a peaceful split of anything?

Trump was a Nixon kind of president. That used to be the political center. (Ever growing the government, but slower than the left would like.)

“The only difference between when Republicans are in control and when Democrats are in control is how fast it happens.”

The GOP might win (s)elections from time to time, but that’s about it. They have no interest in governing and are also incapable of governing. Compare - demonkkkraps pass a >$1 trillion “infrastructure” bill that has more to do with anything but infrastructure, and they do it with slim majority and a knotted Senate. Yet POTUS Trump, with larger majorities in Congress, could not get an $8 billion wall funded.

The move to the far left by the demonkkkraps has caused an opposing reaction. There is no middle because being in the “middle” in the past always meant GOP helped advance the left. You want to build the middle again, then if / when the GOP is (s)elected despite rigged elections, they need to dismantle the left. Trump was doing some of that, but not enough, and with virtually no help from the GOP.

PS - Note to Bobby Jindal, lamenting the loss of the middle. You sound like you have a home in the GOPe, who has let their voters down time and again. You should read the GOPe money begging (lying) letters I get how they are fighting Xiden and the leftists, but need more money. Yet I pick up the paper and Lindsay Graham is rubber stamping judicial nominees, 13 House members vote with demonkkkraps, etc etc. Bobby, your a “nie guy”, but you are in la la land, living in the past. There is no common shared values with the left - we live in 2 countries now. It can’t go on forever.

it does exist...its called MAGA

Its interference with by the derps is via electoral and voter fraud

Those states unable to refusing to run a clean election are depriving the rest of us of our civil right to a vote. They should be “asked” to leave the Union

Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two separate countries — The Czech Republic/Czechia and Slovakia.

The UK left the EU before that was made illegal but it is still a big issue as to who owes who and there’s now a mini-war with France over fishing and immigrants coming in over the Channel...

But peaceful separation is very rare. Usually, anything from our Civil War to the bloody separation of Yugoslavia occurs.

<>Trump, with larger majorities in Congress, could not get an $8 billion wall funded.<>

I suspect half of the pubbie members of Congress welcomed the phony Russia “collusion” nonsense that weakened the Trump presidency and damaged our republic.

Every few days I’m reminded why I reregistered Independent a few days after Jan 6.

We’ll not find free government renewal via the GOP.

has there ever been a peaceful split of anything?

The Czech and Slovak Republics. The Czechs were mainly urban and capitalist. The Slovaks were mainly rural and soft socialist. One day, the leaders of both factions decided they couldn't continue down the path of pretending to be one country. So they met in a long weekend retreat, decided how to split things up and announced their velvet divorce.

Our framer forefathers provided a mechanism like this. It was called federalism.

“I’m curious, has there ever been a peaceful split of anything?”

Czechoslovakia in the 1990s, they called it the Velvet Divorce (I think). In any case, both sides understood Communism and wanted nothing to do with it, so it was NOTHING like here.

I know that Levine pushes it non-stop, but why would the America-hating Leftists abide by a revised Constitution, when they have no interest in abiding by our current Constitution?

The author fails to understand that politics is NOT what it used to be in this country.

Our politicians have been slowly, slowly, slowly been strategically extending their tentacles into every part of our lives and now they think they’ve got us.
Now, it’s their time to go full on - “WE make the rules; YOU pee-ons obey or be PUNISHED! We no longer work for YOU; just shut up and do as you’re told and pay us what we say..”

Our “Presidents” are now chosen- by the elite, for the elite. Presidents no longer have to “move to the center” to gain trust… they do as they’re told - not by the citizens, but from those above.

We are now “governed” by an un-elected oligarchy. We have a good idea who they may be, but we’re never told who they are.

Nothing politicians do now is ever “for the good of the country”. That is dead.

It is 100% about THEM taking over complete power and control over the population- who will be conditioned to do as they’re told and work for the state.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT POINT!!!

Our politicians are LAWLESS.
They want what THEY want.
They no longer CARE about what’s good for the USA.
The USA is simply a vehicle to keep them rich and powerful.

I’m afraid what you say is the road we are speeding down. I don’t see anyway to neuter the ensconced influence of the city states without force.

I live in one. The Soviet of Washington. The crazy dictator is out of control, it’s amazing too because this state has been under the thumb of the dims for over 40 years and they own everything in the Pugetopolis 3 county area.

We have just under 8 million residents. 4 million of those live in the Pugetopolis area. If the battle here starts, it’s going to be interesting and bloody.

Out of our almost 8 million residents we have the largest amounts of CCW holders in all of the western states, 700,000 and growing fast. I expect by the midterm elections next year we will be very close if not over the 1,000,000 mark of state issued CCW’s. We are also an open carry state, it’s in our original state constitution, along with no income tax.

Also, up until the mid-nineties Washington State had the largest NRA membership of any state including Texas. The NRA fixed that, but I digress.

So, when the 💩hits the fan here, it’s going to be ugly, but when the dust clears, the tree of Liberty will flourish. I just hope we find another less horrifying way back to our roots, but that solution exceeds my knowledge.

7,000 elected government officials
300,000,000 citizens

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

The power rests with the people.
Once enough have awakened, the people will rise up.
Unfortunately, the awakening might have to be stirred by the deaths of their children with the 5-11 year olds dying from the experimental gene therapy shots. Sadly.
