PUSHMATAHA COUNTY, Okla. —

A homeowner shot and killed an accused intruder over the weekend in southeastern Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Just after 4 p.m. on Oct. 31, Pushmataha County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the OSBI after a home invasion turned shooting near the intersection of County Road 4330 and Highway 147.

Officials say 25-year-old Shawn Blake Watts arrived at a residence on North 4327 Lane, entered the home and assaulted the homeowner. During the ongoing assault, the homeowner retrieved a pistol and shot Watts, according to authorities.

After being transported to Pushmataha Hospital in Antlers, Watts was pronounced dead.

Another individual was with Watts at the time of the incident, authorities say. According to officials, that person was hit in the leg by gunfire, transported to a Tulsa hospital, treated and released.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Interesting part of the country.

The locals in the area were chased out of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. It was Indian country back then. That’s where the outlaws lived. It’s in their DNA.

“Retrieve”? Not the he word for the job, I’d say. I’ve seen it before in this context. Weird.

It's my understanding that the area is called "Little Dixie" because it was settled by so many confederates after the civil war.

That's just what i've heard.

There is truth in your understanding.

“Retrieve”? Not the he word for the job, I’d say. I’ve seen it before in this context. Weird.

Sounds like it was "lifted" from the Police Report.

Sounds more-official than "got."

I suspect that it was used as a consequence of a legality. Namely: He didn't reach into his shoulder holster and grab the firearm. He maybe didn't even simply pull open a drawer and grab it.

Rather, technically speaking (and this may have legal consequences), the word "retrieve" may be appropriate in cases in which the householder actually has to change his location (e.g., go to the next room) in order to obtain his protection and defend himself.

This establishes (for what it's worth) that:

1. The householder was not already armed even prior to having become aware of the threatening situation, and

2. The household didn't act impulsively, but rather had the presence of mind to proceed in a reasonable manner.

Kudos to the householder!

(Wish only that the accessory to the crime, who was shot in the leg, hadn't been released so quickly.)

Regards,

Yes. Let's not get into TMI (Too much information) but yes... Little Dixie (1st congressional district, btw, heavily Dixiecrat EVEN TO THIS DAY) is an excellent place to drive straight thru in daytime, ON THE INTERSTATE, with no stops.

Just call it good planning for furriners from Kansas or wherever...

Lots of common ground with Eastern OK and AR.

I have some family connection to Western AR, in that period. Unwritten history that is only told by family, one generation to another. (fading fast)

Your understanding is correct. That area of Oklahoma is the Choctaw Nation. To the west is the Chickasaw Nation. The 5 “Civilized” tribes, Choctaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek (Muscogee) and Seminole, which make up all of Eastern Oklahoma fought with the Confederacy in the Civil War. They were unhappy that the Federal government took their tribal lands and forcibly moved them to what is now Oklahoma. So when the South rose up against the Union, the Indians had reason to join them. Also, many many Indians were slave owners. There are many thousands of blacks who are also Native American. So, after the war, the tribes were happy to accept into their lands former confederate soldiers. Some of todays veterans facilities in Oklahoma were originally built for confederate soldiers.

There is NO interstate through the area unless you count the indian nation turnpike. You know that.

Yes, as you just said, if traveling from say, Tulsa to DFW, take the Indian Nations turnpike. Likewise for Wichita Falls.

If traveling south/north use I-35, if traveling east/west use I-40. Maybe a bit out of the way but it’s worth it. DON’T travel the state highways down in that SE quadrant of the state unless you have particular reason to.

One doesn’t wish to frighten anyone but really, don’t go messing around in SE Oklahoma if you’re not from there. Mom told me that fifty years ago and it still holds true.

If one wishes to take the scenic route go out to NM. 🙂

Very interesting information. Thank you for telling me about it. Another aspect of the Civil war about which I didn’t know.
