Great Lakes 'have a fever' as first lake-effect snow sets a record
Accuweather ^ | November 4, 2021 | Jesse Ferrell

Posted on 11/04/2021 8:58:46 AM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

The first significant lake-effect snow of the season dropped nearly a foot of snow near the shores of the Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday. The snowfall was enough to transform parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula into a winter wonderland and break into the record books at one weather station in Michigan.

Snow totals topped 11 inches in northern parts of northern Michigan. Gaylord, Michigan, picked up 11.7 inches of snow on Tuesday, which set a record for the heaviest snowfall in a calendar day in November. That amount also ranked as the sixth highest single-day snowfall in any month. Records have been kept at the National Weather Service (NWS) office there since 1998. Into Wednesday, temperatures remained in the low to mid-30s in Gaylord, as snow flurries continued to fall. The average high temperature there at this time of year is 47 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperatures couldn't make it above the mid-30s Tuesday and Wednesday, though the area was poised for a rebound in the days ahead, according to the AccuWeather forecast.

This is just the beginning of what could be a blockbuster lake-effect snow season, according to AccuWeather forecasters. With few cold outbreaks in October, each of the Great Lakes has a fever, so to speak. With water temperatures several degrees above normal, most of the lakes have set new records for this time of year according to NOAA CoastWatch, which maintains records back to 1995.

You have also described the weather conditions in the Bar Harbor, Maine area as well!

We have over 20 acres.

That provides enough raking for us if we want to.

Probably, though, we’ll be mowing most of it up and tossing it in the garden to compost all winter.

Actually, I raked more on our small lot in NYS than we do here in the country.

Syracuse, NY (where I lived as a kid) is 20 miles south of Lake Ontario and 100 miles east of Lake Erie. We got a huge “snow shadow” from Lake Erie 100 miles to the west. Snow generally didn’t blow southward from Ontario, but the easterly patterns from Erie really dumped on us.

I lived in Fargo, ND. We also had a blizzard in that year.
The gym dome of the new high school collapsed under that snow fall. Of course the designers of the dome lived in Texas!

That doesn’t surprise me. People strive to keep suburban lots looking pristine (a fool’s errand of which I am guilty). People in the country aren’t as hung up on that and just enjoy nature for what it is. I’m on a half-acre in the woods, a mix of Ponderosa pines, Fir, and Spruce trees plus a lot of aspens and some maples and one huge cherry tree. I get the best of all worlds — pine cones, sharp pine cone seeds the squrirrels have stripped, huge Ponderosa Pine needles, small fir needles and lots of leaves.

But no records exist for the dust bowl era, or other cycles to compare it to? 30 years is no where near long enough to establish anything when it comes to cycles, and is what most statisticians use as an excuse to make a trend look like anything they want.

"Oh look at the big increase!!" of a hockey stick graphic made to scare people, yet lengthen it out and you see it's a natural rise and fall of going back centuries, sometimes millennium.

Accuweather has an agenda, lets face it. If the cycle was reversed you think a story would have been written like this one? I'm not saying that the lakes aren't warmer than they were, but do you know about the health of those lakes? When the zebra mussels filtered the water it changed more than you could ever imagine. Cleaning the water meant less absorbing of sunlight, which meant colder water while it happened. Does it mention anything like that in the article? Cleaner means colder, and the waters themselves have changed drastically in the 30 years mentioned.

I'd rather hear from someone that also looks at WHY the water is warmer or colder from other than only atmospheric reasons myself.

I’m guessing that the lakes are warmer because it was a warm summer. OK, now that we answered that, WHY was it such a hot summer?

It was warm and dry over much of the upper Midwest this year, hence the “fever”. I’m betting by early Spring we will break records for ice coverage in the Great Lakes this winter.
