The man who is poised to topple one of New Jersey’s most feared political kingpins has never held public office, he has been a commercial truck driver for 25 years and he claims to have spent a whopping $153 during the primary portion of his campaign.
His name is Edward Durr, and he may be on the verge of one of the most unthinkable upsets in New Jersey political history.
With 98% of the vote counted, Durr, the Republican Senate candidate in the South Jersey-based 3rd legislative district, leads New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney by roughly 2,000 votes — 32,134 to 30,125.
Sweeney, a Democrat, is the longest-tenured Senate president in New Jersey history, having held the post since 2010. He was expected to serve a seventh term in the position before launching a possible bid for governor in 2025.
That was before he was taken on by a no-name challenger in Durr, 58, who has miraculously knocked Sweeney on his heels in a race that was never considered more than an afterthought.
“I joked with people and I said, ‘I’m going to shock the world, I’m going to beat this man,’” Durr said Wednesday afternoon. “I was saying it, but really kind of joking. Because what chance did a person like me really stand against this man? He’s literally the second-most powerful person in the state of New Jersey.”

Truly astonishing. The bigger they are....
The democrats have gone too far.. thinking ww are a bunch of gullibles and they are royalty...
Every year for a very long time.. dems played their political game... it didn’t work yesterday.
Enough got fed up with the dumb antics the blue players are doing in Washington ..
We are better than that... and the voters proved it.
The joke is he spent $150 for the filing fee and $3 on posterboard to make a campaign poster his mom wanted for her front yard.
People are pissed off.
Well did he?
A future where Sweeney is toppled but Murphy survives does not bode well for New Jersey at all.
Maybe Sweeney should switch parties.
I recall his being rational and often wondered WHY he was a dim.
Changing parties would be silly anyway. The GOP is a permanent minority party in the New Jersey legislature, so he’d never be Senate President as a Republican.
1. He’s got a long track record as an ironworkers union leader in a state that has been hostile to private-sector employers for years.
2. He’s apparently got a solid self-education in finance, so he sees the writing on the wall when it comes to the fiscal disaster that has unfolded in New Jersey.
I just hope he is allowed to do his job.
And not made a constant target by the evil doers.
If America citizens continue to open their eyes and take a long look at the DISASTER OF AN EDUCATION SYSTEM, I see a possible change.
There are more Teachers and, indeed, other Government employees in that state than there are stars in the sky.
If, hopefully, the Schools collapse, it would go a long way to save the state.
Even bad mouth, tough guy Christie could NOT control those “elite” irrational people who are in CHARGE OF OUR DEAR CHILDREN.
It would take a miracle, but miracles do happen.
Who expected a Republican to almost win.
Happy we are finally away from it.
(I hope Ciatterelli demands an audit)
Sweeney claims to have found 12000 “lost” ballots.
That is nearly 20% of all ballots cast in the state.
He has never gotten more than 31000 votes.
They are exposing themselves as the fraudsters claimed by others.
12,000 is 20% of the total ballots cast in the state of NJ?
Seems very low to me.
I mis-typed. It was in that particular electoral district:
Underdog GOP candidate Ed Durr delivered a humiliating defeat to Democratic Senate President Steve Sweeney in South New Jersey’s 3rd Legislative District by a razor thin margin of 52 percent of the vote to 48.
It’s another embarrassing upset for the Democrats after they lost the Virginia gubernatorial election, struggled in the race for New Jersey governor and were swept by a red wave in Long Island, New York.
But two days after voters cast their ballots, Sweeney said the race still isn’t over and he’s not conceding. That’s despite the Associated Press indicating that every precinct in the legislative district has already finished reporting.
