At McAuliffe HQ, a Trumpless Reality Sinks In

MCLEAN, Va. — The party faithful had been chatting amongst themselves for three hours, periodically craning their necks for a glimpse of the cable news playing on mute in the press pen, nervously refreshing their drinks at the cash bar, and quietly complaining about the lack of reliable wi-fi in the Hilton ballroom, when Terry McAuliffe finally arrived. He didn’t say much.

In a speech that barely lasted five minutes, the normally chatty politician thanked his supporters and his family and his staff before quickly leaving the stage. Notably, he did not concede. And, for the first time in a long time, the Democratic candidate for governor didn’t say a single word about Donald Trump.

McAuliffe’s strategy had been to tie his Republican opponent, Glenn Youngkin, to the former president so often that the race would become a replay of the 2020 election in a state Joe Biden carried by 10 percentage points. Instead, McAuliffe wound up turning his own race into a referendum on whether Democrats could win without Trump in the picture. Prior to Tuesday night, there was measured optimism that this gambit would work. “We are very hopeful,” Debbie and Thomas Siebert said of McAuliffe’s chances. Longtime friends of the candidate, Debbie Siebert and her husband, a former ambassador to Sweden, added early in the night that “we are realists too.”

If you compare the numbers, McAuliffe had fewer votes than the Democrats running for Lt Gov and AG.

Adding Trump would have fired up the fraud machine. They couldn’t allow a McClinton loss to give Trump a victory.

Everything is Trump Hate now. It completely drives the Democrats.

Beyer explained, and “I doubt seriously that 2022 will be about Trump.”

Au contraire, Trump is a specter that is haunting the East Coast or they wouldn't still be talking about him. Serious graveyard whistling going on here.

Nice try to paint Trump as the reason for Democrat wins. The article was probably written by the deformed squish McConnell.

Did MAGA voters take Youngkin over the finish line?

“a tied state congress”

I have good news; the Repubs actually obtained a 1-seat majority, on further review!

“McAwful was going to win the election UNTIL HIS “PARENTS HAVE TO SHUT UP” gaffe.”

You are correct, sir. Until then it was just the usual schoolyard fight. I can only think that the “we know best’ attitude is so ingrained in their heads that they thought it was just an understood fact.

The teachers know what your kids need to know. Not the dumb parents.

They said the quiet part out loud.

McAuliffe wound up turning his own race into a referendum on whether Democrats could win without Trump in the picture.

Except that he wouldn't stop talking about Trump so he put Trump in the picture.

The guy on FNC last night was showing voting percentages for selected counties in Virginia, 2021 vs. 2020. There were some rural counties in southwestern Virginia where Youngkin was getting about 89% of the vote, where Trump got only about 85%.

Numbers never lie, but liars use numbers. That was the big lie. He kept stressing percentages, not totals. Trump beat Youngkin in totals on everyone of those examples. The Democrats just did more poorly (not a fair comparison).
