45-50 years ago 60 MINUTES had a report on train thefts.. Mike Wallace talked to the black gangs breaking into the cars. Their last haul had been meat, and the biggest prize the stole was GUNS.
It seems the cars used a thin wire cable, easy to break, and a crush lock seal instead of a secure system to keep the looters out.
