[history]
YOKOSUKA, Japan - A U.S. Navy attack submarine was determined to have hit an uncharted underwater mountain last month, officials said in a statement following an investigation.

You can’t hear a mountain on passive sonar...

Don't modern submarines have the equivalent of
Ground Proximity Warning System like in airplanes what's ahead?
Any World War II submarine Axis or Allied hit underwater mountain?

wow, sounds like a real good sonar system they have going
—
sonar cannot see sea mounts - the area is poorly mapped and in need of a hydrographic survey. Assuming they did not hit a USO.

"... has been upgraded "to carry out some of the Navy’s most sensitive missions."" Yep!
Todays swabs cannot steer or see things on the surface AND, we now find out, cannot steer or detect things underwater...
OTOH, the crew was fully vaxxed and represented all sexes, races, ethnicities, and sexual preferences...
The chicoms are petrified...

Don't modern submarines have the equivalent of Ground Proximity Warning System like in airplanes what's ahead? The have a fathometer which gives constant depth under the keel but also gives away their position and is not used outside the 100 fathom curve going in and out of port. TMI now I have to ....

They don’t use the sonar as the enemy (pick one) can pinpoint your position.

Submarine needs windows and headlights to see where the heck they are going duhhhhhhhh Who woulda thunk it?Long time ago on a nuclear submarine, the captain told us (under certain conditions) that we OOD's should raise a periscope for practice.
I can tell you even years later that you can't see much more than almost nothing, even on a sunny day, when just a few rays make it down to even a shallow depth.
As to the people who keep asking about sonar, we carry both active and passive sonar systems but active is not used (almost never). Passive sonar is NOT going to "hear" a mountain.

Passive sonar can’t detect silent things.
To: ßuddaßudd
No sonar.
Sonar on a sub would be like you driving around with your hand constantly on the horn...not very stealth.

What kind of fathometer do these attack subs have? Or is that classified?

We should ‘leak’ to the chicoms that our sub was about two hundred feet lower than it actually was and our sub was doing a high-speed run. Hopefully they will try it also.

Answer to 1: No
Answer to 2: WWII subs didn't operate nearly as deep as modern subs. WWII subs spent much less time submerged. They operated on the surface to make speed and recharge batteries.

Hit a mountain.
On passive sonar the boats relie on charts. If there is a massive earthquake, things change. See USBN San Francisco.
Active sonar they would have missed it. Must have been cat and mouse (or a Crazy Ivan) that made things interesting.
Just a guess, and the S. China sea.

Good to know where those underwater mountains are but I thought they had them pretty well charted by now.

then how do you avoid mountains? You rely on accurate charts and knowing your exact position at all times. That's the hard part.

All subs have a fathometer ( which they never use because it is also an active emitter of sound )
