Long time ago on a nuclear submarine, the captain told us (under certain conditions) that we OOD's should raise a periscope for practice.

I can tell you even years later that you can't see much more than almost nothing, even on a sunny day, when just a few rays make it down to even a shallow depth.

As to the people who keep asking about sonar, we carry both active and passive sonar systems but active is not used (almost never). Passive sonar is NOT going to "hear" a mountain.

We should ‘leak’ to the chicoms that our sub was about two hundred feet lower than it actually was and our sub was doing a high-speed run. Hopefully they will try it also.

Answer to 2: WWII subs didn't operate nearly as deep as modern subs. WWII subs spent much less time submerged. They operated on the surface to make speed and recharge batteries.

Hit a mountain.

On passive sonar the boats relie on charts. If there is a massive earthquake, things change. See USBN San Francisco.

Active sonar they would have missed it. Must have been cat and mouse (or a Crazy Ivan) that made things interesting.

You rely on accurate charts and knowing your exact position at all times. That's the hard part.
