To say that there is a lack of black players in baseball is not telling the whole story. One of the blatant incorrect details of this is the amount of white players in the majors. And a lot of that is that Hispanic is not a race.
In recent decades, the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the United States has easily been the most discussed population trend. Fueled by immigration and births, the U.S. Hispanic population grew from 4 percent of the population in 1970 to 16 percent—or over 50 million—by 2010. The increase in the U.S. Hispanic population has attracted considerable interest from different sources, including advertisers looking for new markets to political parties who believe the Hispanic vote is now essential to win elections.
But behind all the clamor, there is often a lack of understanding about who identifies as Hispanic and how they fit into the U.S. demographic makeup. Typically, Hispanics are described as the largest minority in the U.S. when compared with other racial groups. But this is actually an “apples versus oranges” comparison; the official definition used for Hispanics is a person from a “Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.” In 2010, most Hispanics identified themselves as white, which would technically make them part of the majority. In 2020, there were 62.1 million people that could be considered Hispanic and by census are still identified as white and most still claim such. Thus the disparity of white versus black as if they are joined with the white identifying people, then are whites the majority or people part of the whites that are Hispanic for the purpose of this article.
It would be like saying there is a small amount of people in New York City if compared to the other parts of the state. And if you make it Long Island only and add the rest to the other pieces of the state, it’s worse.

The Braves and Astros each have one black player on their World Series roster: Terrance Gore of Atlanta and Michael Brantley of Houston. Most MLB teams had two or fewer black players, and three had none at the start of the season. About 50 percent of the league, meanwhile, is made up of Latin players.
A study released in August indicated black players make up less than 8 percent of players in the major leagues, a telling number as baseball celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Negro Leagues in 2021. In the 1970s, the percentage of black players was more than double what it is today.
“I definitely notice there aren’t a lot of black players right now,” Grissom Jr. said. “You can’t help but notice.”

Are there enough black kids playing baseball and getting good enough to make the minors and then the majors? If there are and they still aren’t making it, there could be a problem. If there aren’t, then that’s the problem.
It’s like the National Park Service worrying that blacks make up small percentage of their visitors. Are blacks being kept out, or do they just choose not to go to National Parks?
