World Series highlights the dwindling of Black players in America's pastime
NBC News / Comcast ^ | October 30, 2021 | By Curtis Bunn

When he was a kid, Marquis Grissom Jr. would sometimes shed tears in the car on the ride home from youth baseball games.

He cried because he heard “racist comments” from white opponents — players and especially parents, he said — as he competed on the field with an all-Black youth team in Atlanta.

As the World Series plays out this weekend between the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros, the glaring lack of Black players on both teams, and MLB in general, is not lost on Grissom. The Braves and Astros each have one Black player on their World Series roster: Terrance Gore of Atlanta and Michael Brantley of Houston. Most MLB teams had two or fewer Black players, and three had none at the start of the season. About 50 percent of the league, meanwhile, is made up of Latin players.

A study released in August indicated Black players make up less than 8 percent of players in the major leagues, a telling number as baseball celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Negro Leagues in 2021. In the 1970s, the percentage of Black players was more than double what it is today.

“I definitely notice there aren’t a lot of Black players right now,” Grissom Jr. said. “You can’t help but notice.”

“You can’t help but notice.”

That is correct when you view absolutely everything through a a racial”lense”

It does seem that there are more Latin American players than ever before.

And in recent years top players from Japan, Korea, and some other countries are going into the American major leagues.

True, there are a number of black Latin American players. Apparently they don’t count, for purposes of this complaint.

My thought exactly. I guess they don’t consider Hispanic blacks as black. How is that not racist?

What you WON’T see NBC “News” being concerned about:

Every time I watch a college basketball game, I can’t help but notice the lack of white players on the court.
Every time I watch track and field, I can’t help but notice the lack of white sprinters.
Every time I see TV these days, I can’t help but notice fewer and fewer whites in commercials.
Every time I look at colleges, I can’t help but notice there are Black Student Associations but no White Student Associations.

Minor leagues. Most players are going to spend 4 years in minor league cities. Black players with athletic talent are going to pick football or basketball in bigger cities, where the big money comes much faster.

Many American blacks are too stupid to know that Hispanic is an ethnicity and not a race.

Aside - Ready for Georgia?...

That’s easy, they’re not “black black’./s
I’m waiting for NBC to highlight a sad white guy bemoaning the fact that there aren’t that many white players in the NBA. (and no, players from Europe don’t count as ‘white’.

Identifying yourselves as an “all black” team doesn’t shelter you from the usual taunting during competition. Try being overweight, or wear glasses...

So there’s a lot of hispanics and they can play. No one is going to give anyone the trip to the MLB if they can’t play no matter their freaking color of their skin. Same goes for “crackers” in basketball?

I do remember the racial divide in Florida when a teen. Blacks played Pony league and whites played Senior League. I remember going over and watching the pony league guys and their third place team would have kicked our 1st place butts.

When people STOP looking at race and divisiveness I’ll watch sports again. I really thought we were over this BS until bathtub Barry started screaming about racism, beer summits, rainbow WH and men in womens bathrooms. No one called out the racism last year when cities burned for a criminal passing counterfeit bills and dosed on Fentanyl...he was black, it sucked how he died so he gets a statue and they tear down Jefferson?

We’re really in a Marxist world and if blacks don’t want to play baseball anymore then go play Lacrosse or cricket. I can’t get past three sentences in these danged racial “equity” BS racial articles. I guess we just can’t all get along( paraphrased from ole Rodney PCP King).
