8 potential jurors advance in Ahmaud Arbery slaying trial

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — "A judge found eight potential jurors qualified to advance Tuesday following intense questioning aimed at finding an impartial jury for the trial of three white men charged with chasing and killing Ahmaud Arbery, whose slaying last year sparked a national outcry.

Father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and a neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, are charged with murder and other crimes in the 25-year-old Black man’s death after a cellphone video of the Feb. 23, 2020, killing was leaked online two months later.

Two of those qualified Tuesday said they know some of the defendants. One said his father is a longtime prosecutor who worked with Greg McMichael before the defendant retired as an investigator for the local district attorney shortly before Arbery was killed.

“He’s a friend of my father’s and he’s been over to our house multiple times,” the man said.

The other said her husband and father-in-law know Bryan.

Defense attorneys insist the three men committed no crimes. Greg McMichael told police they believed Arbery was a burglar after security cameras previously recorded him entering a nearby home under construction. He said Travis McMichael fired in self-defense after Arbery punched him and tried to grab his weapon."

Larry English complained repeatedly that AA had been repeatedly captured on surveillance video since February 202.

English -- obviously deeply concerned about the repeated incursions into his home construction site -- shared his video of Arbery with the entire world.

"Elizabeth Graddy, an attorney for the homeowner, Larry English, said the text exchange occurred on December 20, 2019. In it, English sends a video clip from his surveillance camera to the police officer. The officer responded, telling English that one of English's neighbors is Gregory McMichael, a retired police officer and retired investigator in the local district attorney's office."

"McMichael "said please call him day or night when you get action on your camera," the officer wrote in his text message to English".

I wouldn’t be stealing from a construction site, so it’s not a hypothetical I would ever have to consider.

What stolen items were found on him?

No, because resisting arrest is never a good idea. If you’re being placed under arrest, then you have to accept that you are being detained.

Neither one was a police officer. What powers of arrest did they have?

Ahmaud Arbery may have had previous run-in with alleged killers

"A new witness in the case told police he believes Arbery was the man who was poking around a construction site in the Brunswick neighborhood on Feb. 11 — 12 days before the unarmed black jogger was shot dead nearby by two white men, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Diego Perez said the owner of the construction site, Larry English, texted him a security video on Feb. 11 and told him someone was trespassing on the property. He asked Perez to check it out — which he did after arming himself, the outlet reported.

That’s when Travis McMichael — who is now charged with Arbery’s murder, along with his father, Gregory McMichael — pulled up, Perez said.

“Travis saw him in the yard and Travis stopped,” Perez told the Journal-Constitution. “He confronted (the man) halfway into the yard. He said (the man) reached for his waistband, and Travis got spooked and went down the road.”

Travis McMichael, 34, then returned with his 64-year-old father — both of them armed — but the man was gone, Perez said.

Perez said the trespasser had been seen at the site in security videos months earlier.

Arbery was spotted at the site on Feb. 23, when surveillance footage shows him looking around the half-built house before he continues jogging down the block. That’s when the McMichaels pull up in a pickup truck, block Arbery’s path, and confront the unarmed jogger, cellphone video shows."

That cross-examination ought to be a hoot.

'Now, Mr. Perez, when Mr. English texted you the video of the trespasser on his property, did he ask you to go over there?'

'Yup.'

'Did you share that video with the McMichael's and the other trespass videos too?'

'Yup.'

'Did you recognize the trespasser? Was it the same person in the other trespass videos? Was it the deceased?'

'Yup.'

I don’t trust the Federal Government to do the right thing. But I know how the Federal Government operates. I omitted the fact that this trial is political. Not criminal. And another thing, evidently the elder McMichaels failed to learn during his tenure with Jackie Johnson’s Office is that no one messes with a Black person, regardless of what he/she does with negative consequences to that individual. Mac Michaels and his partners are about to learn this lesson the hard way.

"Barnhill argued in his recusal letter that the McMichaels had “solid first hand probable cause” that Arbery was a burglary suspect. Barnhill did not elaborate on what that probable cause was or how he’d reached that conclusion, although two thefts had occurred in the neighborhood in the first two months of the year. One was a theft of $2,500 worth of fishing equipment from English’s property, which he said he didn’t report to police but confirmed to The Daily Beast. The second report was of the theft of a 9mm handgun from Travis McMichael’s unlocked truck, which was first obtained by the Brunswick News.

In his letter, Barnhill said that “Arbery’s mental health records and prior convictions help explain his apparent aggressive nature and his possible thought pattern to attack an armed man.” Arbery was convicted of bringing a handgun to Brunswick High School in 2013, court records show. He was also convicted of stealing a television from Walmart in 2017."

"Wait and see how it plays out."

Nobody has to wait to see that you've already gotten it repeatedly wrong about this case. What a shock - not.

Your bias is here for one thing only - my amusement. Stick around for more punch down.

"The initial Prosecutor could not get away from the case soon enough. He wrote his buddy a letter passing the case to him." - splurt

Nope.

Have they ever found the real motive for this murder? If you carefully read everything about the crime, you will find that this was premeditated murder. They knew who Arbery was and targeted him for some reason. The evidence is there?

They killed him for leaking a cellphone video of his killing two months later? Are we in the Twilight Zone, or is the writer new on the job?

“If someone chased you down and pulled a gun on you, what would you do?”

If he was a jogger you have a point. He was a damned thief and was fleeing. He circled that pickup like a shark and attacked the good citizen from around the front. Went for his gun and got killed in the process.

They were good citizens in a cul-de-sac, watching their neighbors. Kinda a traditional thing.

“Seems like Double Jeopardy”

Double jeopardy: that is exactly what it is.

They deny it is double jeopardy but that only confirms it is.
