PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland is believed to be the first city in the country to offer bereavement leave for pregnancy loss to city employees.
City Commissioner Mingus Mapps touted the new policy in a Tuesday interview with KATU News.
"Policies like this are exceptionally rare in the United States," said Mapps. "In fact, Portland may be unique in the nation for providing leave to people who are mourning the loss of an unborn child."
The policy covers situations like abortion, stillbirths and miscarriages. While the intent is to help employees cope with loss, Mapps sees other benefits.
"We also wanted to destigmatize pregnancy loss because that's an often-lonely space," he said.
Michelle Rodriguez is credited with spearheading the effort to adopt the policy after seeing a similar law passed in New Zealand. Mapps says he's grateful that Rodriguez advocated for the policy.
"I'm deeply relieved," he said. "I think we've made the city a better place to work."

Why reward killing your child?
Because this isn’t about loss - this is about giving women time off to have an abortion and recover (because abortion isnt birth control - its a surgical procedure… but don’t you dare demand that it be regulated as such.)
Bereavement leave for a clump of cells?!?! Weird.
abortion... because they KNOW WHAT THEY DID IS MURDER?
Free paid time off for killing the baby, but fired and kept out of hospitals, malls, stores for not getting the vax.
Next will be medical leave for getting your ears pierced.
I’m more concerned with the pitiful amount of paid leave that people get for losing a loved close relative. Most employers I’ve worked for give 3 days. Three days to work through the agonizing grief and other practical outcomes from losing a part of you. Something doesn’t add up.
Portland the city that sucks.
Yesterday Portland kids from one high school left the building for a rally that they be mandated to take the clot shot.
Probably same kids that marched to turn Portland into a 3rd world feces farm.
Article uses the phrase “unborn child.” So they are now admitting that abortion kills a child and the parent should grieve the killing of that child through abortion?
The ability to talk out both sides of their mouths with conviction is incredible.
