'Gain-of-function' research: What it is and who is doing it in North Carolina [FLASHBACK Gain-of- function research began]

Sen. Rand Paul and Dr. Anthony Fauci brings attention to Research known as GAIN-OF-FUNCTION caughting attention of NC Rep. Cawthorn, saying GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research in NC needed "to be stopped forthwith."

What is GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research?

GAIN-OF-FUNCTION experiments take viruses, or other organisms, altering their genetic make-up to gain a new ability. In viruses, this can mean making more transmissible or more DEADLY.

Why is GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research research controversial?

Many scientists say risks outweigh any potential insights. Potential danger of creating a new virus highly contagious to humans led President Obama to put a moratorium on GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research in 2014.

However, this BAN only applied to GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research CONDUCTED on SARS, MERS and influenza viruses.

The ban origins in 2011 study involved H5N1 influenza viruses lab modified to make airborne transmission possible. The NATIONAL SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD for BIOSECURITY asked researchers 'NOT to publish their methodology for modifying the H5N1 virus over concerns that bad actors could use to cause an OUTBREAK in humans.' (Those studies, however, were eventually released in full.)

In 2014, a series of SECURITY MISHAPS at CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL LABS caused re-examination of lab security across the nation, and built momentum limiting GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research.

The ban was lifted in 2017. Now GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research is evaluated on case-by-case basis with a review board at U.S. HHS.GOV signing off experiments with high scientific merit.

Scientists split on the decision: some calling it necessary and others it would LEAVE SOCIETY LESS PREPARED TO DEAL WITH FUTURE PANDEMICS.

Marc Lipsitch, epidemiologist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, stated GAIN-OF-FUNCTION studies "have done ALMOST NOTHING to improve our preparedness for pandemics — yet RISKED CREATING AN ACCIDENTAL PANDEMIC."

Is GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research done in NC?

GAIN-OF-FUNCTION research has been done in NC, notably atlab of UNC-Chapel Hill researcher Ralph Baric.

I think normal people would say “weaponizing” the virus.

But, I guess that makes it sound bad.

So they talk about “gain of function” which is probably cool, and awesome, and science-like.

Yes, they were partners with the Chinese scientist Shi Zhangli, the “Bat Lady” and the Wuhan Institute of Virology on some of the G.O.F. studies.

Brandon Cawthorn. Fake and a plant. He needs to be one term and done. Even one term is too much.

For those who don't know or remember, in late January Cawthorn proclaimed Biden's legitimacy and stated the election was not fraudulent.

"Yes, I think I would say that the election was not fraudulent. You know, the Constitution allowed for us to be able to push back as much as we could and I did that to the amount of the constitutional limits that I had at my disposal. So now I would say that Joseph R. Biden is our president."

"So when I contested to the election, that was within the constitutional guidelines that the framers had set up. But after I've done that and the electors and the delegates from each state elected Joe Biden asour president, I respect the office. He is my president, and I want to work with him to make sure that we can bring some meaningful change to the American people."

Since Biden's inauguration, Cawthorn has signed onto a letter along with 16 other GOP House freshmen, saying they look forward to working with Biden. Notably, Cawthorn is the youngest member of Congress in modern history, according to US House records, at just 25 years old.

Above quotes and excerpt are from a Jan. 24, 2021 news report in an interview he gave with CNN

He endorsed Biden as president, called Biden his president, stated the election was not fraudulent and stated he wanted to work with Biden.

A Free Republic post on Cawthorn kowtowing on CNN was made at the time, which can be seen here: Madison Cawthorn Once Opposed Electoral College Certification…Now He Says Biden’s Victory was Legitimate

Why did he acquiesce in this way? Note that about a week before this complete kowtow to Biden on CNN, the Democrats and Pelosi were threatening to kick him out on congress. Posted here at FR:

Democrats pressure Pelosi to expel Madison Cawthorn [North Carolina]

So we can see that at the first sign of trouble he rolled over and showed his belly to the democrats.

Once again, some writer pretends to write intelligently on the topic and misses the boat completely.

Maybe you are correct. And yet, Cawthorn took a stand against GAIN-OF-FUNCTION in his state

UNC-CH is nothing but a liberal sh*thole. Believe me, I worked there for 1-1/2 years. Could not wait to get out of there.
