Hertz, the car rental agency, said Monday that it had placed an order for 100,000 Teslas, a sign of growing momentum in the shift to electric vehicles.
By the end of next year, when the Tesla order is completed, electric vehicles will make up more than 20% of Hertz’s global vehicle fleet, the company said.
Hertz said it was teaming with NFL quarterback Tom Brady to promote its EV offerings in a marketing campaign.
“Electric vehicles are now mainstream, and we’ve only just begun to see rising global demand and interest,” Mark Fields, Hertz’s interim chief executive, said in a news release. “The new Hertz is going to lead the way as a mobility company, starting with the largest EV rental fleet in North America and a commitment to grow our EV fleet and provide the best rental and recharging experience for leisure and business customers around the world.”

Scarce gas cars versus EV at rental places....
New government mandate:
At all airports, commuter stations and other car rental agencies, employees must have two jab proof AND only rent EVs from now on. Biden has spoken.
“Businessmen staying in the city and not wanting to hunt for a gas station on the way to the airport to return a rental car. Be sure that Hertz did the homework on this. Vacationers can choose from the other 80%.”
So electric cars don’t need to be returned with a full charge?
My guess will be you can return it with a full charge for one price or return it needing a charge and pay another price. Just like the gas tank on a current gas or diesel rig.

Really funny news story would be the rescue van runs out of electric charge due to mistake in the dash gauge or by a young employee who didn’t notice it was low.

My experience is often seeing Teslas operate in two modes.
The powerful instant acceleration generally is used for aggressive driving through traffic.
And then you see them limping at 40 mph in the slow lane of the freeway hoping to get to the next charge station.
catch and burn... the liabilities will be too much... with the auto pilot mess ups.
Hertz is an excellent name for an EV rental company.

Schedule your drive with the Tesla app and precondition your car, have everything fully charged and warmed or cooled when you depart.
They have a battery management system that knows just what the battery likes. This controls the heating/cooling of the battery.
A happy battery lasts a long time.
Hmmmm.... Let’s see here. With every car I have ever rented, one had to return it with a full tank of gas, or pay a pretty penny for them to fill it up. So, even if the hotel I’m staying at has a good overnight charger, I use part of the charge getting back to the car rental agency. So, if there is a charger RIGHT NEXT TO THE AGENCY, it will not be like a gas station nearby, where I can just pour energy into the tank. I will have to wait for the complete charge before returning the car. I suspect Hertz will make plenty of money with all the cars returned without a full charge. Will Hertz be eligible for the tax break / credit on each Tesla, paid for by you and me? Hertz will make money until those batteries have to be replaced.
Funny.
And regular traffic in the city now features the driver ahead looking downward at their phone on their lap, honking from behind them, and then darting ahead when they realize the light changed.
And much worse: Slowing to 15mph or 10, then speeding up to 40 off and on as they intermittently FINISH TEXTING AND WAITING TO READ THE REPLY ON THE PHONE.
I don’t see any rental company keeping electric cars long enough for the battery replacement to be an issue. Average usage is 13 months.
Those Teslas will be sold off just like gas cars.

Plenty of Government subsidies no doubt. You can bet the tax payers are paying for this nonsense. Yet I hope this finishes off the company for good.

exactly ... who wants to spend all of their time worrying about finding the next charging station and then being stuck there for hours getting a “fillup” ...
and exactly the same thing goes for business rentals, only likely more so ... what business person making a trip to strange city wants to add to the stress of that with the stress of trying to keep an battery car charged ...

A friend on his way home from the dealer stopped over to show me his new insane fast BMW, hammers it just as a local cop pulls out of a side street. We were doing 70 in a 30!
The BMW was very quiet, the headlights auto-adjust as the front rises, and somehow the cop missed him.
Not to worry, he received more than a few tickets in that car!
