‘Rust’ armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed once gave unchecked gun to 11-year-old actor: report

The “inexperienced” armorer in charge of weapons on set of Alec Baldwin’s movie “Rust” had given a gun to an 11-year-old actress without checking properly for safety, a report said.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, 24, daughter of prominent Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, was head armorer on set in Santa Fe where Baldwin fired a prop gun loaded with a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Gutierrez-Reed’s alleged misstep happened on the set of the upcoming Nicholas Cage film, “The Old Way” and temporarily halted filming, sources told The Daily Beast.

“She was reloading the gun on the ground, where there were pebbles and stuff,” one source told the outlet. “We didn’t see her check it, we didn’t know if something got in the barrel or not.”

Gutierrez-Reed reportedly handed the gun to child actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, forcing concerned crew members to intervene, the report said. The gun was then checked for barrel obstruction, according to the sources.

“She was a bit careless with the guns, waving it around every now and again,” a source said.

“There were a couple times she was loading the blanks and doing it in a fashion that we thought was unsafe.”

A “Rust” production source described Reed as “inexperienced and green,” to the outlet, adding that there had been two other incidents of accidental discharges by crew members.

Looks like a tat of a Crow on this ditz shoulder. Somewhere Brandon Lee isn’t amused.

Still, the “report” was talking about blanks, not live ammo which is highly regulated, if not prohibited, on sets. She’s definitely culpable, but Arec fired the gun that killed a wife and mother and he bears responsibility too, IMO.

The assistant director who gave the gun to Baldwin worked on the sequel to The Crow.

A way to remove any responsibility on the part of Baldwin. When he hired her. When weapons on set protocol insists all crew and cast personally be shown the weapon is empty.

He showed double negligence. He will walk. Hope her family she’s his ass off at least.

Unbelievable...every kid I knew was aware of the first rule of gun safety: always treat a gun as if it was loaded.

Inexperienced? Poor excuse. When I was 21, it was my day in the barrel, lucky me... I was tasked to run a live hand grenade range at ROTC Summer Camp at Fort Lewis.

The NCOs didn’t know I was Rifle Team Captain at school, running a range was second nature to me. They were shocked that a cadet had complete control of the range.

Somebody needs to pay for such a senseless loss of life.

I’m not sure how legal responsibility works out on a job site like this.
Terrible story no matter what.

A blank with a pebble in the barrel becomes live ammunition.

I’m still going with attempt to load with dummy rounds with at least one indistinguishable live round somehow mixed in.

Easily checked by dry firing through all chambers.

Everyone involved in this shows zero firearm sense. We often see experts spouting “#1 rule, never point even an empty gun at that which you don’t wish to shoot or destroy.”

Well maybe that is #1-b

#1-a is: When someone hands a gun to you remove the magazine and rack the slide to eject a cartridge that might have been left in the breech.

If it is a revolver, swing the cylinder out and see if all chambers are empty. If as in this case there are one or more chambers with something in them, eject all and inspect for type of ammo.

Accepting anyone’s word that a firearm is empty is stupid and a road to disaster.

Remember thousands of people have been killed by “unloaded” guns.

The same rule applies to any firearm, whether pistol, revolver, rifle shotgun or whatever.

Baldwin hired her and didn’t run a background check on her.
