Last week, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a pledge to legalize millions of vehicles being illegally imported from the United States. While it sounds like a phenomenal way to help the nation to contend with product shortages that are driving up vehicle prices around the globe, all of the cars had been smuggled previously and many were presumed to have been stolen.
This has created a lot of tension. Despite there being evidence that these vehicles frequently end up becoming workhorses for criminal cartels, illegally imported beaters also provide a cheap alternative to poorer residents right when automotive prices (new and used) have started to disconnect from reality. Times are tough and destitute families aren’t going to care where a car comes from when it’s the only one they can afford. So López Obrador has officially launched a new regularization program designed to bring these automobiles into the fold.
“We are going to legalize all of them, we are going to give them a permit, we are going to recognize them as owners of the vehicle,” López Obrador said ahead of signing the amnesty agreement. “Because there are a lot of people who use these cars because they don’t have the money to buy a new car, and with these cars they take their children to school and carry out their activities.”

Mexicans just doing the jobs Americans don't want to do.
More like all were stolen.
I’m sure he suggested it.
Think. He’s trying to get us out of cars and onto public
transportation. Every chance he gets he applies more
upward pressure on gas prices, and less product on the
supply side.
Here he’ll drive up used car prices by increasing shortages.
There are a lot of American traditions on the line here.
People with RVs, had better start thinking about what to
do with them if they can’t use gas vehicles for recreation.
Smile if you like, but the folks who vote for Biden in many
instances don’t use cars or trucks.
The fed gov will buy the RVs for pennies on the dollar and use them to house illegals.
Reminds me of the plumbing business truck in the US that was sent to the Middle East and used by ISIS and the plumbing logo was still on the truck.
Yep, the govt will ban rv’s I bet in 10 years or less, same with old antique cars from the public roads
Isn’t that special.
cars for invaders program...
Something has to be done with all this used crap we have in the USA.
Apparently their isn’t money to be made in the USA for dismantling
reconditioning, etc for the car or parts. So Mexico here we come.
There used to be a movie theater in Tucson located right next to the freeway; I don’t know if it’s still there. Your car could be in Mexico before the movie was over.
The cartels steal 3/4 and 1 ton trucks from all over Texas to be used to bring drugs across the border. This had been going on since the 90’s.
Oh yes, you can’t bank on that.
Bingo! Cars are stolen in San Diego and are driven across the border before the car owner knows that his car has been stolen. I have been down there many times. I always see lots of cars with California license plates and registration tags that expired years ago.
The fed gov will buy the RVs for pennies on the dollar and use them to house illegals.
Hundreds are coming into Britain each week. ‘How are we going to provide housing for all of them?”, he asks. They come here with nothing. We will have to feed, clothe, and house all of them.
Yet we are looking at close to 2 million in the last 12 months? Like those crossing the English Channel, they arrive with nothing. They will all have to be clothed, fed, sheltered and given health care at taxpayer expense.
Is there currently housing available for an extra 2 million?
How many are leftovers from Obummer’s criminally wasteful cash-for-clunkers program? Many of the engines which were supposed to be destroyed either weren’t or were “destroyed” in such a way that they would be relatively easy to rebuild. Then they were shipped out as scrap
Mexico used to(and might still) have huge import duties on imported cars. People living in Mexican states close to the border have/had special license plates that allowed them to drive only so far into the rest of Mexico. Tourists had to get special stickers on their cars to drive beyond the border region and to legally leave the country, the car had to leave as well.
This will allow cars stolen in the U.S. to be legally distributed all over Mexico, not just the frontier zones.
Mexico doesn’t have a domestic auto industry to protect. High duties are just theft. We complain about the corruption in our govt but it pales compared to Mexico.
“illegally imported” or, stolen and showing up in Messico?
