Well it seemed like 36 years to me.
He could have used the Amtrak story as a segue to what a train wreck his presidency has been.
Outside the NEC (Boston to DC) Amtrak doesn’t own any track and relies on host railroads, mostly freight, to run on. Passenger is supposed to have priority over freight but often times the much longer and slower freight trains can get in the way.
As to the on-board service, some of the older cars show their age, but are still well maintained and the seats are much better than airplane seats. The two big this for me are food and connectivity.
Food: Currently, they basically have 3 dining options; Cafe car (snacks, cold and microwaved sandwiches), “Flex Dining” microwaved TV dinners for sleeper passengers on shorter routes (NY to Chicago, NY to Fl, etc) served in a likely brand new dining car making no use of the kitchen and “Traditional dining” AKA full service restaurant on wheels dining which is not cheap on long distance western trains.
IMHO the need three dining “classes”
Short distance (i.e. NEC): Current cafe car with snacks and light meals is fine
Medium distance (i.e. NY to Chicago/12+ hrs) Dining car with fresh quick service style meals, think Panera Bread style menu and service speed.
Long Distance (i.e. Chicago to the west coast): A variety of reasonably priced items inspired by the destination of the train, not nation wide cookie cutter menu.
Next need to fix connectivity. They have had standard outlets at each seat long before airlines even considered it. The whole fleet needs some sort of satellite internet access, start out west on the trains with no WiFi at all and work your way to the coasts. In the process add live TV, movies, etc. Sure, watching the scenery is nice and all, but in the winter with little daylight or on ling trips spending hour after hour of looking at some farmers fields dosen’t cut it.
Fix those issues and I would then consider looking at it, even though the schedule might not be as many trips/options as a plane.
