Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is touting his state's seaports as a solution to help ease America's ongoing supply chain crisis, offering them as an alternative to the overwhelmed ports in other parts of the country.
In a Tuesday press conference at the Port of Jacksonville, known as JAXPORT, DeSantis pointed to backlogs such as those currently happening in California, where the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach both had a record number of ships waiting to unload the day before.
Last week, the White House said LA's port had vowed to start opening 24 hours a day, but the port has yet to lay out a timeline for when that might happen.
DeSantis says Florida ports, in contrast, are already open at all hours and can handle a lot more business than they already do.
"Our ports operate 24/7, I mean, that should be happening anyway," the governor said. "We in Florida have the ability to help alleviate these logjams and help to ameliorate the problems with the supply chain."
"We're here, we have capacity," he emphasized.

I love the idea but it’s very cost-prohibitive. Its probably cheaper for them to lose the product at sea (get the insurance money, etc). He also did this a few months ago, doesn’t seem like anyone took him up on his offer.
Plus Florida doesn’t have the insane regulations that California has that burden the truckers needed to haul product away from the ports.
How many waiting ships are > Panamax?
New Panamax (or Neopanamax)?
Alaska should expand its port.
Not true Hapag-Lloyd a major European shipper announced about two weeks ago to bring a lot more traffic to Jacksonville ports, it’s in Florida and under DeSantis the media won’t report it..I live in Jacksonville so it’s only local news
Bet the Panama Canal just quadrupled their prices
Do the Chinese run the Long Beach port ?
DeSantis is the only leader. While other brag about how they can sell the vaccine, he’s busy leading.
Like Donald Trump, Ron Desantis thinks outside-the-box.
He’s a prime candidate for GOP nominee in 2028.
Assuming the large ships and barges can fit through. The larger cruise shops can’t pass through.
The larger cruise shops can’t pass through.
Not true, Miami can handle up to 20,000 container ships (largest). The Suez canal handled a 24,000 container ship recently.
FL should just take ships from Europe and ships from china that have aftermarket auto parts and the like. No dollar store or walmart junk.
Imports from Asia far outweigh imports from Europe/Africa. East coast ports take longer to reach from Asia.
Panamamax is the best in preventing “bleed through”.
I was talking about the Panama Canal, not the Suez Canal or Miami ports.
The on-board “expert” on our Panama cruise told us that the wider ships don’t do that itinerary because of their size. Of course, he could’ve been making up is “info”. That is possible.
East coast ports take longer to reach from Asia.
Not if they are waiting months offshore.

Fun Fact: Goods made in America do not get stuck on cargo ships.
I was under the impression that they were building another set of locks to handle larger ships. Of course the locks aren’t the only thing defined by Panamax. There’s also at least one bridge. But I don’t know how high it it is, or how high they stack containers.
But I know of at least one luxury sailer that’s mast is “Panamax” and I’m sure they’re others.
It’s planned, like Covid. Nobody is lazy, just following orders.
