Terry McAuliffe Says His Comments About Parents’ Role in Education ‘Taken out of Context’
The Epoch Times ^ | October 19, 2021 | GQ Pan

Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe is trying to clarify a previous comment, in which he said that parents should not tell schools what to teach.

The comment in question came on Sept. 28 during the final debate before the upcoming Nov. 2 election. When Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin pointed out that McAuliffe in 2016 vetoed a bill which would have given parents more control over what kind of books their kids are exposed to at school, the former governor responded that parents shouldn’t have “the right to veto books.”

“I’m not going to let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decisions,” he said. “I stopped the bill and I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

The statement has since faced much criticism, including from Youngkin, who launched a “Parents Matter” campaign to mobilize families and parents to “reject Terry McAuliffe’s attempts to silence parents and stand between them and their children’s education.”

In a new campaign ad released this week, McAuliffe appeared to distance himself from the stance that parents shouldn’t have a say in what schools teach, saying that he “always valued the concerns of parents.” He also accused Youngkin of taking his words out of context.

“As parents, Dorothy and I have always been involved in our kids’ education,” McAuliffe said. “We know good schools depend on involved parents.”

“That’s why I want you to hear this from me: Glenn Youngkin’s taking my words out of context,” he continued. “I’ve always valued the concerns of parents. It’s why as governor, we scaled back standardized testing, expanded pre-K, and invested a billion dollars in public schools.”

I did my first and only survey tonight in 10 years. I normally ignore them. On the Survey I’m a transgendered woman, who is liberal and democrat. But I will not be voting for Terry :-)

I think we all know he believes parents should not have input into their children’s education. But with the controversy, he says his comments are taken out of context. And the media will dutifully report, it was out of context, and not to believe our own ears.

That’s what the media do.

His fellow travelers would vote for him no matter what he says. Real people see this as a bald faced lie and many would vote against him because of it.

No, Terry, your words were NOT taken out of context. The meaning was pretty clear to me - that parents have no right to object to ANYTHING that is put into those little skulls full of mush.

Walking this back is a lonesome and treacherous road.

It was a bridge too far, maybe? Lots harder to return, if you have been burning the bridges as you go....

I am surprised he was so tone-deaf that it has taken this long to realize that his comment destroyed his campaign. He’s toast and might as well concede now as only cheating will gain him a win.

Took an awful long time to come up with that lame excuse.

Why didn’t he say something right away.

Loser.

“I stopped the bill and I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

The arrogance of the ruling class. They’ve long ago stopped seeing the public as their paying customers and now see us as little more than cattle.

So McAuliffe thinks his words were taken out of context. I can’t vote for or against him, but if I could, I’d vote for him to be taken out of circulation.
