Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who sadly passed away from COVID complications, will be remembered for many accomplishments and failings. His legacy will have detractors on the right (he was a sellout who endorsed Obama) and the left (he misled us about WMDs), but I can’t help thinking what if he had been the future of the Republican Party?
Counterfactuals are always messy, but bear with me. There is reason to believe that Powell was Ronald Reagan’s vision of the Republican Party’s bright future. And Powell might well have defeated Bill Clinton in 1996. That would have made Powell America’s first Black president. Assuming re-election, he would have been president when 9/11 happened. Everything thereafter would, likely, have been very different.
And, of course, it’s hard to imagine a starker contrast than what eventually happened to America (and the GOP): President Donald J. Trump.
This actually could have happened. Fourteen months before the 1996 presidential election, a Time/CNN poll found that “If the 1996 presidential election were held today, Colin Powell, running on the GOP ticket, would beat Bill Clinton 46 percent to 38 percent…”

Give him credit where it’s due. He successfully opposed Bush 41 going further into Iraq. He resigned at the start of Bush 43’s second term when he learned that the WMD thing wasn’t real. He was never the future of the GOP, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his good points.
People say stuff like that a year before the election. It doesn't necessarily mean Powell would have won, and it certainly doesn't mean he would have been that great a president. He would have been more or less like Bush/Cheney, though maybe less personally motivated to take down Saddam Hussein. Looking at today's generals, there isn't much reason to want one to become president, and that goes for Powell, too.
Let’s be clear. Colin Powell was NOT a Republican. He belonged to the Uni Party, and voted for Barak Obama. Let not history forget this.
I wouldn’t have written in Powell for dog catcher, but hey, that’s just me. The media had a creepy hard on for putting Powell on a GOP ticket from ‘92 onwards. To his credit, Powell has zero interest in running for office.
Life long republican here.
Had Colin ever become leader of the party I’d have quit.
Always a RINO, colin was always crappola.
In the end Powell proved to be a racist. He chose race over his country.
Powell would easily have been on the 1996 ticket if he expressed the slightest interest.
Matt Lewis has been a Bush League Republican propagandist for years.
He pines for the good old days when we could be duped into voting for Assistant Democrats.
Once his public service career was over he quit pretending and began endorsing Democrats.
Powell knew who had informed the press about Valerie "007" Plame, who was his #2 at State, but he stayed quiet and let Scooter Libby go to prison on manufactured evidence by a corrupt disciple of Robert Mueller. Powell was a man without honor IMHO.
He was a lefty.
John McCain endorsed the Kenyan from Indonesia while he was running against him, neither McCain or Romney had any intention of winning, they were both intentional willing Designated Losers.
Matt Lewis probably would have done it for free, he used to be on Townhall spreading his praise of Assistant Democrats.
Now he is on Yahoo doing the same.
It would have been much worse if he had not been vaccinated...../s
Colin Powell endorsed Obama over McCain, Obama over Romney, Hillary over Trump and Biden over Trump.
He left the Republican Party twenty years ago.
🎯
Spot on. He had never been thoroughly vented. He was never so popular that he would have automatically drawn Republican votes. Plus…he had a history never fully examined. He went with the flow and allowed Media to create him over time. He will be laid to rest with all the dignity afforded such icons. Deserved or not.
There is no reason that a General would automatically make a good President. Quite the opposite. Grant for example was a disaster. Ike wasn’t though he was more of a politician.
Generals are used to having their @$$es kissed 24/7. This doesn’t prepare them for running for the Presidency. They are also used to having their every whim gratified instantly. Also not a plus. These days they are merely bureaucrats, heavily entitled ones. Imagine Milley as President.
Please.
He voted for Obama TWICE and Biden.
Did he even vote for Bush?
The Deep State whispered into Colon Pals ear, the Mi Lai Massacre didn’t happen. It whispered into his ear, there are WMD’s and Uranium in Saddam’s Iraq. It whispered that Syria was a bigger threat than ISIS/ISIL. It shouted that Muhammar Khadafi need to fall. It demanded that Egypt ignore the crowds in the street, and put into power a Muslim power mad man. It screamed that Trump was Satan incarnate. In each case, this “man of integrity” soul’d out to his Masters.
I am sorry that he died, I feel the pain of death even from far away. With that said, he was no hero.
