It isn't surprising that people are getting fed up with their political partners. There is sufficient divergence of opinion on how to handle most national problems that we are unable to reach a consensus. We have trouble finding even solutions that make both sides equally unhappy.
Separation is not the answer. This is a matter of separating the country based on beliefs about what the driving factors of solutions should be. Even for a country founded on an idea, this is not practical.
The most obvious problem is the sheer logistics of separating into two groups. Considering that states, cities, and even families may have representatives of both sides, do you try to force people to move apart, or do you allow those who dissent from their neighbors to stay and continue to sow discord? Free speech, however interpreted, will not prevent people from disagreement. Pretending to solve the problem by ostracizing each other is more or less what we already have, and no divorce is needed.
If that problem could somehow be managed, there would still be the issue of trying to preserve inter-nation commerce. Will we stop trade between the states? What if red states don't want to produce tons of non-GMO organic whatever, and that's all they allow themselves to buy? They will assert cruelty as an explanation for not producing such things, no matter how much normal produce is offered. We have insults lobbed at us now, and divorce will not fix being blamed for everything that goes wrong in blue states.
Since leftist economies tend to be run by incompetents, they also tend to fail. Where will their people go? Will we stop them, and if so, how?

Good example, what would you do about Georgia? Build a wall around Atlanta? Atlanta is so spread out so it would be difficult to decide where to build a wall. On which side would Buckhead belong?
--Pres. Jefferson Davis
I don’t hear a lot of people saying this. People like Rich Lowry write columns about this to hurt Trump supporters.
The last thing we need is more governments established within this country.
Ditto Pennsyltucky aka Pennsylbama.
Red “T” (minus a blue donut hole for Center County/PSU) with one midnight blue city and one blue/purple city.
Sad to see such cowards lamenting a possible divorce or secession and true Independence form DC. Both sad and pathetic. Lowsome creatures that think this way should keep quiet..
A state is like a country. If it secedes it becomes sovereign. People still vote, politics carries on. What is so hard to understand?
I'll bet that practically every divorce includes one party that thinks the same thing. That doesn't stop divorces. It just makes them uglier.
I see lots of problems divorcing my socialist neighbors. But like many conservatives, I'm willing to take my chances on freedom.
Yep. It won't be a pretty divorce if Florida and Texas decide to secede from (leftist) USA. Many other states would follow them. Potentially Georgia. Then you'll see a civil war within the state of Georgia because Atlanta would not agree to the secession.
As I see it....we have California and New York pitting against Texas and Florida.
You'll also see civil wars within Florida and Texas. Do you really think Miami or Houston or Austin, or some other urban areas in those states, will peacefully accept a new conservative national government?
James Carville once said, “Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.”
The difference is that those cities are mostly Hispanic. In Miami, you have many Cubans there who are mostly Republican.
You would make Georgia so uncomfortable for the liberals in Virginia Highlands, Morningside, Toco Hills, Emory, Inman Park, the 6th Congressional District, that they all move and take their Hollywood friends with them.
You create Liberal/Democratic islands all over the country and force those people to move. Isn’t that what they do to everyone else.
A bunch of liberals move into a place like say, Boise, Idaho, and start to make it unbearable and too expensive for the locals. So, they are forced to sell and move.
Use their very same tactics against them.
Look at Salesforce in Texas. Texas passes its abortion law and Salesforce is so taken aback that they offer any employee that wants out, help with moving out.
Liberals and Democrats in the urban areas have convinced themselves that without them, the rest of the country would go dark and broke. Except these are the people that think tomatoes grow in the vegetable aisle. They think they’ll be able to charge their electric cars through solar panels and wind turbines, but they completely take for granted where all their electricity comes from. Make anyone that buys an electric car, charge their car through renewable energy sources. Lets see how many are purchased.
The people who speak against this still love that government, no matter what they say.
A national “divorce” would be extremely difficult to implement, yes. The only way I could imagine it working would be with something like how the Peace of Augsburg (1555) handled the Catholic-Lutheran split in the Holy Roman Empire. The idea there was that residents who were unhappy with their local prince’s choice of either Lutheranism or Catholicism would be given a grace period for relocating to a different principality where their preferred religion prevailed. In other words, let’s say that Florida becomes part of “Red State America,” liberals therein could be encouraged and even assistance in moving to Blue State America.
Atlanta could potentially be destroyed if the folks in Buckhead go forward with the secession movement they have. The city will lose 100s of millions of dollars and become another Detroit. There aren’t enough northern liberals and hipsters in the city to keep the money coming, without Buckhead doing its part.
If Buckhead divorces, Atlanta won’t be able to do anything as it slowly starves.
Do you really think Miami or Houston or Austin, or some other urban areas in those states, will peacefully accept a new conservative national government? I’m thinking that the people of those areas will have a choice: accept the new Conservative National Government or form the 21st Century Trail of Tears as they all head to the East or West Coast.
And even the states on those coasts will have a YUGE problem. What happens when Eastern Washington and Oregon decide to join the Conservative National Government? Who’s going to stop them? What will Oregon have? Portland, Salem and Beaverton? Not much of a country. Same for Washington.
I see a few possibilities for our future:
1) Things continue as they are, with increasing tyranny and then attempted physical persecution of conservatives & non-leftists.
2) World War III or massive natural disaster or massive terrorist attack that upends the country, and changes most things in unforeseen ways.
3) Civil War II. (I don’t see how a divorce would be done without the “Union” side using arms against any who would leave the USA or cleave the union.)
