David Amess, who represents Southend West in Essex, eastern England, was stabbed by a man who walked into his constituency meeting at a Methodist Church.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after a 69-year-old British lawmaker in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party was stabbed several times while meeting his constituents at a church, witnesses and media said.
"He (Amess) was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene," police said.
David Amess, who represents Southend West in Essex, eastern England, was stabbed by a man who walked into his constituency meeting at a Methodist Church.
"A 25-year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered."
Amess's office confirmed he had been stabbed but gave no further details.
Amess was first elected to parliament to represent Basildon in 1983, and then stood for election in Southend West in 1997.
His website lists his main interests are "animal welfare and pro-life issues."
The stabbing at Amess' meeting with constituents has echoes of a 2010 case when Labour lawmaker Stephen Timms survived a stabbing in his constituency office, and the 2016 fatal shooting of Labour's Jo Cox just days before the Brexit referendum.
What’s an “MP”?
Lay down with dogs wake up with fleas.
Member of Parliament. Like a congressman.
Oh, OK, thanks.
LIBERALS are the dangerous terrorists.
I used to wonder how hitler found people willing to kill for him.
Todays liberals seem like they would be gleefully willing.
Waiting for word on whether the attacker was a person who lost their mind due to Covid stress or one who lost their mind due to a ‘religion’.
Nothing to say about the killer. Tells me that is someone from a protected class.
Sudden Jihad Syndrome?
The fact that the attacker is unidentified makes me think this was another act by a member of the “religion of peace”.
Yep, that is surely everyone’s first thought. Like the fellow who went nuts with a bow and arrows in Norway — a Danish convert to Islam.
Or BLM or ANTIFA.
My first thought, only identified as a 25 year old.
Perhaps, but several European countries seem to avoid naming suspects to protect their rights in general.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak wrote on Twitter: "The worst aspect of violence is its inhumanity. It steals joy from the world and can take from us that which we love the most. Today it took a father, a husband, and a respected colleague. All my thoughts and prayers are with Sir David's loved ones."
RIP.
One news report I read said his signature issues were pro-life and animal welfare.
Stabbed by “a man”...
That’s true - but it goes further and it’s designed to help ensure the accused gets a fair trial.
We will know by tomorrow the background of the “alleged” murderer and it would not surprise me if it is some religious freak but could equally be someone who took a dislike to the MPs stand on things like abortion (against it), animal welfare (for it) etc.
One things for sure, meeting your MP at a surgery (one to one Q&A) is likely to required pre-screening in the future.
Satanists have infected England even worse than the US.
